I am considering Sony’s GPS-CS1KA (http://webphotoresource.blogspot.com/2007/06/wherever-you-gothere-you-are.html) GPS Image tracker and wondered if anyone was using one and how they liked it.
I am espically currious to know if they work from inside an airplane. I shoot lots of shots from airplanes and the geo-taging would be a neat feature to have since most images from the plane have no geographical identifiable features.

If it can get a GPS signal, I dont know why it wouldnt work. I dont know if GPS would mess with the avionics of the plane though...

In the US it is a requirement to turn off the send/receive feature on electronics. I think this would mean the GPS would have to be off.

It would definitely work on the plane, but as pgiancola mentioned, the airlines probably wouldn't want you to have it on during the flight. I have seen people using GPS devices while flying though. GPS's aren't like cell phones, they are just receivers. I don't know enough about it technically though to speak with any authority.

I pilot my own plane so I am really only worried about signal reception inside the cockpit. I know for instance with some hand held gps you need to put an antenna in the window to get a signal.

You should be fine in an airplane. This particular unit seems to have trouble getting satellite signals when you are in or close to buildings.

Ive got a normal hand held GPSr that I use for Geocaching (http://www.geocaching.com/) which I took on our last holiday to cyprus, and planned to use during the flight, unfortunately GPS receivers were included in the list of electronic devices read out by the captain that were banned from use during the flight :(

there are many alternatives to the Sony that does the same thing (while being cheaper and better). Semsons sells a lot of em: http://www.semsons.com/datalogger.html
A good source of info is gpspassion and their forums: http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/default.asp?_SetCurrentVersion=EN
I use a royaltek rgm-3800 and works a treat.
