Hi, I recenlty bought a Packard Bell ixtreme X2712, running Vista, that has integrated cardreaders. Unfortunately they won't work. I have that model where on the top of the computer you click and a part pops up that has card-readers and a USB port. It also has the jacks for the headphones (they work fine). I tried two different camera cards and nothing happens (usually you should get something indicating that you've inserted a removable something, but absolutely nothing happens and it doesn't appear as external drive or anything either in explorer) - I also plugged in a USB key and got a message about an unknown device. The key works perfectly in any other USB ports on the pc. I went into the device manager and a "unknown device" is listed. It says there are no drivers installed so when I try to update the drivers it tells me it has the up to date drivers.... (I also tried that looking in system32 that was recommended) . I think the drivers don't load or something. I read a previous thread with similar problems, but they're not quite the same. Any ideas?

Sounds like a warranty issue to take up with Packard Bell (and I wish you luck of it!). At a minimum they forgot to connect the USB cable to the motherboard. Worst case the MoBo has a bad header for the USB port.

Could be that Vista's not playing well with the card reader. I had the same problem with an HP laptop running XP64. Check the device drivers page for "Show Hidden Devices" if you haven't already, uninstall all the problem devices, then reboot to see if Vista will find new hardware and load the drivers.

I went into device manager and clicked on show hidden devices, but i'm not really sure what I'm looking for. I'm not really sure what the card readers would be called device type like...

Call Packard Bell technical support. You have a new computer, it is under warranty, and they will tell you what to do to get it to work!

Yep, Yep, should have given you that advice first if it's still warranteed... Problem Devices will show up as yellow question marks in Device Manager. You can uninstall them and when you reboot, Windows will try to auto-detect and load the drivers for you.
I remember on the HP laptop, my card reader (TI1620) showed up as 'Base System Device', but yours may appear as something else.
