Hi All,

I have been researching lenses and wanted to get everyone's opinion on which would make a better everyday lens. The Tamron AF SP 28-75/2.8 XR Di LD or the Canon 28-135 IS.

It depends on what you do everyday, so really the lens depends on your needs. I don't think it is possible to recommend either lens without knowing that.

What do you tend to shoot? Do you like to travel light?

I chose the Tamron 28-75 F2.8 XR Di as my everyday lens because it was faster and lighter.

Sure, I lost out on the telephoto end, but hey, I've got feet...

Thank Richard,

I would like to travel light for plain shooting. (e.g. Family, Friends, and general landscape) I would also have a telephoto in my collection for further reaches when I knew I would need it.

I chose the Tamron and never looked back. This lens is small and light for constant 2.8 aperture, and it sure produces very good results (you can see a lot pictures from this lens in my flowers gallery (http://www.pbase.com/olegis/flowers&page=all)).

Hi SU,

I don't own any of these lenses, but I will most likely buy the Tamron as 'walk around' lens for my DSLR.

Main differences are:

- the Canon 28-135 is a longer lens and has IS. If you don't have other long lenses or would like to have more reach when walking around, this might be important.

- the Tamron 28-75 XR DI is a lot sharper wide open, according to many discussions here.
There have been many testimonies that it has the same optical quality as the 24-70L.
Take a look at threads by J.A.F Doorhof and Olegis, they use the lens to producing outstanding results.

Hope that helps.

Best regards,
Andy

Well, the Tamron is not up to the L quality, but it sure produces very acceptable results, even at f/2.8. Here is a picture taken at 75mm f/2.8 :

This one was taken at f/4 :

It is a VERY nice lens for the price.

I have sample images including a 100% crop of an image taken at f/2.8 in my post in the marketplace:

I am fortunate to have a copy of the Tamron 28-75mm :D . Unfortunately I also have the EF 28-135mm :(

Does that answer your question?

Have not used the other one, but Tamron is definitely good!

Haven't used the canon, but I've had excellent results with the Tamron. It's on my 10D probably 80% of the time.

My "everyday" lens is the much derided Canon 28-200 f/3.5-5.6. For me, it's the best all-around lens for street photography, snapshots/tourist shots, and general work. Lots of zoom, and the lens, while not L quality, is no slouch (at least, my copy is, most people seem to hate this lens). I've gotten shots with it where the "typical" 28-70-ish lenses wouldn't have had the ooomph to get there. It's on my 10D unless I need another lens.
