It's about time I got one of these.
Looking at these:
Canon Remote Switch RS-60E3 (cord)
Canon RC-1 Wireless Remote Control
Both are about the same price.
I want to use this for long exposures at night. Both are the same price roughly.
Any difference?
Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, the IR sensor on your camera is located in front of the camera. Therefore, in order to use the IR remote control, you would need to point the remote control at the camera from the front unless you have something to bounce the signal off of if you're in the back. The RC-1 would be great if you wanted to include yourself in a group picture but for long exposures, you might be better off using a cabled release.

I agree with Leo, and another plus is that you won't ever have to worry about batteries running out.

I say get both! :D They aren't too expensive and have different uses. Best of all, you can attach the RC-1 to your neck strap, I find that really handy.

I had not thought of that.
Cabled release sounds like the way I need to go.
Thanks, everyone.

I purchased an OEM wired trigger from Canon for my 10D. When got my 350D, I decided to take a chance on a Chinese rip-off from eBay. It works as well as the OEM model and for the same price as the Canon model, I was able to get BOTH the wired and the wireless infra-red releases and still have enough left over for a twelve pack of Coke.
By the way, the unwired Chinese rip-off appears to have a longer range than the OEM model. http://cgi.ebay.com/8m-Infrared-Remote-Control-Canon-Digital-Rebel-XT-XTi_W0QQitemZ170176362790QQihZ007QQcategoryZ64345Q QssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
There is certainly a place for both wired and unwired releases as has been mentioned by other posters. It is nice to have both. Now, using the unwired remote, for family group shots I am not always absent from the pictures.

The RC-1 remote has the 2-sec delay option, which would still allow for getting out of your shot. I got the RC-1 and them made my own wired remote from an old cellphone hands-free set. It works wonderfully.
I also have a one of these remotes (http://homepages.nyu.edu/%7Etn282/fs/rc4remote.jpg), which works well and can trigger a multitude of cameras (Canons, Nikons, Pentax...). Only the shutter ("S") and 2-sec delay shutter ("2S") are useful for Canon XT/XTi though. I was selling it for ~$12 on the Sell forum, so it's about half the price of a RC-1.

Try one of these. Very cheap off ebay and have worked very well for me.

Phottix wireless FTW!!! Get it off ebay, awesome and get a wired one. I have both, wired is backup unless i'm close enough to use the wire one.

if you're shooting models you don't want a cord.... go wireless, other than that it makes no real difference in the end

I don't know.....
This Phottix remote is supposed to have a reach of 100 meters. If you are trying to get a macro/close-up shot of something that is extremely skittish - like a bird or suchlike that can be lured to a given spot if there's no-one else there - or a nest or so......it's possible to set-up the camera and be a long way away when you take the shot.

I'd go with the RC-1 wireless remote. While it's true the sensor is in the front of the camera, I find that it's not that much of a hassle to simply point the remote in front of the sensor and click the button.
In return you get way more flexibility since you can now take pictures of yourself instead of doing the whole hit the timer and run thing. There are a lot of things you can do with a wireless remote that you can't with a cable.
And as for the battery thing, I've had mine for a year and it hasn't run out even once. Admittedly I only use it occasionally.

I'd go with the RC-1 wireless remote.
That's why the Phottix looks like it could be really good - it's true wireless, not infra-red. One part plugs into the rempte socket on the camera, and the sender is in your hand. It's supposed to work in any direction up to 100 meters......
We'll see.

I own both. Got the wireless one first then got tired of reaching around the XTi and got the cabled one. The wireless is nice for a few things mainly cause it is always on my camera neck strap if I need it. The wired one will allow you to keep the shutter open as long as you like while the wireless won't also.
