I'm looking to replace my old HP Photosmart slide scanner because it isn't Mac compatible. I've been looking at the Canon 8800F and the Epson V500. I'd like to consider the V700, but right now I need to keep the cost under $250US. Almost all of my slides are Ektachrome, and some people posted here that the 8600f didn't work well with chromes. Anyone know if that applies to the 8800f as well? Does anyone have experience with either of these two scanners or can recommend something better in that price range?

Thanks.

Doesn't anyone still have old slides they scan? Maybe the question is too specific, let's try "what kind of slide scanner do you use, will it scan Ektachrome well, and what do you like/dislike about it?"

Several other threads on this, I don't have time to search for them right now. Don't recall a 'chrome section to the responses.

Would the canoscan fs4000 work for you?
It's a great scanner, about $350 on ebay.

I read the other threads, which is what turned me on to the Ektachrome problem with some scanners. Most of the scanners mentioned in the other threads are no longer made and most have been passed by technically. No mention of either of the two scanners in my original post has been made, but someone out there must use one of them. Online reviews can only be taken with a grain of salt and many user reviews online are fake so I was trying to get some real opinions from photogs who are using them.

A quick look on the net at the fs4000 looks interesting, though I couldn't find any current or completed listings on eBay. I'll look into that a bit more, the resolution is impressive even if the dynamic range of 3.4 is the same as many new flatbed scanners. The autofocus is another plus.

Thanks. Any more suggestions out there?
