Okay,
I've read all the links on pocketwizards i can find. Now i just need a couple simply answers on wether my theories are right.
If i want to put a camera in the ceiling for a basketball game with an on camera flash, I need two transceivers. I also need the pretrigger cable for the actual firing of the camera. I understand all of that and can mount the camera.
Now, do the pocketwizards need to be on the same channel or different ones? also i can fire them with just the button on the handheld transciver i have right?

The PW are the same, so you can have 2 or more. One as a trigger. I use a cable for the PW on the camera and put the flash on the hot shoe and then use the other as the trigger. If you want to use the flash off camera, then you need 2 cables (PW to camera on stand, PW to flash on stand, PW as trigger). Same channel is required.

If your remote camera has a flash mounted directly on the hotshoe, the only remote PW unit (a receiver) you'll need is the one that fires the camera. And, as you indicated, the PW would need to be connected to the camera via a pre-triggered cable. The flash won't require a PW unit because it's mounted directly on the camera.
And, of course, you'll also need a PW unit in your hand as the transmitter. This can be a PW unit or a Sekonic light meter with a PW RF module built in.

Question, for remote camera firing does it have to have a pre-trigger cable? Because from what I have read it doesn't need it, but there will be a slight delay.

I think you need a cable. My 5D cable cost me around $100. Yes, it's expensive. Like Leo said, not just any trigger will work. You can call B&H or go on the PW website to see all the options.
When I thought about PW, Jon saw that B&H was having a sale, $20 off each PW. I thought that's all I needed, 2 PWII's. But then I found out I needed 1 cable to connect the 5D to the PW and another cable for the flash and the PW for off camera flash. It's not cheap if you go this route, but it completes the set-up so that's really all I needed for the work I do. Worth the investment. I use the PW more often that I thought.

Yes, that is correct. Some pre-triggered cables have a switch that allows you to work it either way. If the camera were prefocused manually and set to manual metering mode, you wouldn't even see a delay when using a regular release cable.
