B&H has it on special in combo with the Manfrotto 488RC2 ballhead for $203 or along for $96
Is it a good one? What other options $200 or less to match with the 488RC2?

I much prefer the 055ProB (formerly sold in the US as the 3021BPro) tripod. It's taller and sturdier than the 190.
The 488RC2 ball head is a very good choice.

I have the 3021BPRO and love it. Sturdy as a rock. A little on the heavy side so don't count on climbing mountains with it :-)

I just got the 055prob and the488rc2 ball head as I had only seen them on the internet I did not have a feel for the sturdyness and size I went to a real camera store that had several good tripods and tried hands on really like the combo - my husband acts as my sherpa and he was not worried about the size or weight - I carry the camera and lens stuff and he totes the tripos and we hike a lot - the 190 was a bit light and tippy for the bigger lens - I guess it is what ever works for you - but get a hands on tryout just to feel the real item

1. Read the sticky.
190XDB, really depends upon your kit, that is only a 11 lb capacity tripod, not very big.
I personally don't care for the RC2 or any of the Bogen QR.
Only extends to 62 inches, how tall are you? What are you shooting?
Ultimately you have to do this yourself, it appears you are making this based a tight budget. The 190XDB is pretty light weight, here is what I suggest as a budget minded option but there are thousands of combinations out there.
Much rather see you with the 055X, Adorama kit is $159 but can't say if it will work for you without knowing your set up.
I assumptions:
Your largest lens is no bigger than 70-200 2.8
This is not for every day use or long hiking trips
Look at this option
055XPROB - $167 - capacity 15 lbs
Giottos MH 1302 $89 capacity 18 lbs
Then save another $49 and buy the Giottos MH 658 clamp with plate(MH 649)
Good luck.

Hi,
sorry for my delayed response.
I am no longer considering the 190XDB.
I am looking at the 055XPROB.
AT B&H, I only see it in kits with Manfrotto heads. The 488RC2 was recommended to me previously. The total kit is $274 from B&H.
I searched for the MH1302 and found all kinds of Giottos ball heads listed as pro from prices around $120 for the 1302 up to $180 for the 3300.
My setup is a 30D for now. My largest lens is the Sigma 12-24. However, I am in the market for some type of zoom.
This tripod would be my "daily use" or really only tripod. The current one I am using is crap. I don't mind lugging around something heavier if it is sturdy and quality and will stay a good choice as my gear accumulates.
I am on a budget in the sense that I don't need to waste money on super fancy stuff when something less expensive will work for my uses.
Now I am seeing that the 055XPROB is only rated at about 15 pounds. So getting a ballhead rated for more might be a waste unless I wanted to have one ballhead and eventually buy another set of tripod legs...
Looking at the MH1302, it is priced at $120. This includes the MH-655 Quick Release System.
When I search MH-658, I find it in combo with the MH3300 for $178.
The MH649 appears to be a longer camera plate top for use with the same system as the MH658 which includes base and top plate.
How do I determine the plate size that is best for my 30D with battery grip?

How does it fair in the wind? What does your gear weigh?
Also, do you have a ballhead?

This is what I am planning to buy:
Giottos MH-3300 ballhead with MH-658 $178.00
Bogen/Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod $167.90
I didn't find any combo deals anywhere. Any other suggestions or input before I pull the trigger?

I just brought this set up from a local store:
Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod
Manfrotto 3437 head
This is the best set up. I am using it for my 40D with Canon 24-70mm lens. See sample:

My system works nicely for a total of < $300. Same legs as the post above but with the head you want. I walked in the local camera shop knowing exactly what I wanted, and they just happened to have it in a combo package all set up on display. :D Shop around your local camera stores. Mine aren't much off from B&H.

Can you manage the 70-200 lens on there without any fear of wobble even with light wind?

I just received the
Giottos MH-3300 ballhead with MH-658
Bogen/Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod
From B&H. These are killer. I love them. Very solid, very nice construction. Quite versatile. A little heavy but I will gladly lug them around...

I use the 055XDB, which can handle 15.4 lbs. I use it in combination with a Bogen 3265 Trigger release ball head that can handle 5.5 lbs.
Fairly sturdy setup for most lens body combos I use. It could probably handle a lot more weight, but the limit is in Portrait orientation, where the ball grip is carrying all of the weight.
