View Full Version : My first "serious" 40D macro shots

Some of my first bug shots with the 40D. Not much difference to the 20D apart from the shutter sounding like someone hitting a wet blancmange.

I like the serious 40D shots ;-). 30D shutter sounds similar. love the springtail shots.

Great first shots Brian.....but you are going to have to upgrade your list of cameras by your signature too!!!

Thanks Alistair :)
The shutter noise had me worried- thought I'd broken it on the first shot :)

Think I'm happy with it- haven't had a chance to explore all the new features yet but did try a liveview shot of the first springtail at 5:1- it is usable even without screen magnification. The response of the LCD is fairly fast but there is a problem with handheld shots at this magnification because it takes a significant time for the camera to actually take the shot (due to the mirror being put down again before the shot is taken) so you can get focus drift.

The springtails are all 5:1 uncropped except the 3-D (cropped) and the underside shot (4:1) so the 2nd springtail is a real biggy coming in at 2.1 mm body length.

Nice shots there Brian, I've had no luck with Live View and handheld macro either. Maybe with table top stuff and a tripod it might be more usable but for creepy crawlies it isn't all that useful.

That doesnt sound to handy then haha, how long approx is the delay between pushing shutter and taking shot?

Live view is for studio macros with a tripod, not much use in the field. Underside shot is one of the best i've seen for detail of the furcula.

Didn't take you too long to find your feet with the new pinhole box Brian ;)

The second springtail shot is excellent and the underside shot too is fascinating showing such detail.

I didnt think the second to last one was up to your usual standard, but the rest certainly are :-)

Really guessing but about 0.5 secs I think.

Thanks for the comments all.

Toby - just copying Mark with the under springtail shot.

Linda and Bryce - I actually liked the second to last shot best :)- slightly unusual limited DOF for me though.

JK1 - Viewfinder seems brighter than 20D and perhaps bigger. Might be my imagination but it seems to take shots faster even in my one shot mode I normally use. Other than that the biggest difference is I have to use a different RAW processing route to normal (using DPP intead of C1pro) but having just about used to DPP, it seems to give similar results to c1pro. Lastly the shutter noise is vastly different.

Good series Brian, looks like the 40D is usuable after all ;) Have you made useage of the HTP yet? Could be a useful tool with highlights.

No haven't tried HTP yet - will get round to it eventually assuming it does something when you are shooting RAW :)

No the first one is a globular springtail about 1.8mm body length - tend to find them in damp leaves this time of the year. Totally harmless- they just graze algae and detritus.

Your springtail shots are the the only ones I have seen that show the matte, almost translucent texture of the springtails' exoskeletons. The level of detail is just superb. #1 is my favorite out of this batch, although I might crop the bottom third up a bit.

You know I can never get these stereogram things. But I just gave myself a headache persevering with this one and got it! Now I can see your others also.

And is it just me, or is that one of those spermodome(?) thingys at his back left there? It only seems to become apparent in the 3D image, not the 2 side by side.

Hiya Brian,

Excellent series of shots, #4 is my favorite & a superb shot, I'm intrigued as to how you captured this one's underside please ??

Cheers for now

Glad you got the 3-D - as you found out once you train yourself to see them it's much easier after. Can't see any spermatophores although the waxy hairs on their backs with dewdrops on look a bit like them.

Thanks Mark :)

Thought I'd done the underside shot the same as you ? - I have a glass microscope slide where these hangout and sometimes one is kind enough to walk on it :)

Wonderful series, Brian. A fitting way to break in you new camera. I love the raku like colors of the first springtail. As, my mother would say, "in good health."

As for me, I intend to sit back an enjoy the view.:)
