I have a complete newbie question... :oops: ...I just bought a 1D used. Supposedly the PS 5.0 LE was never registered. I load the software, but can't hook up the camera to the computer...yet. The firewire card is on it's way. So I follow the directions and load the canon software, then PS, but like I said, I can't hook up the camera. So I shoot some RAW+JPEG and try to open them with PS. I use the import option and I open the folder on the CF card and it seems to load, then an error message comes up. I can't figure out what the error is as XP just wants to send a message. Any ideas as to whats going on. I appreciate any help. If this has been hashed out already, please direct me to where I need to go. Thanks in advance.

PS 5 can not read or edit your cameras RAW files.
You need to use the Canon Software to convert the files to TIFF and then you can edit the tiff files in PS 5

Maybe I wasn't clear about what's going on. I've loaded the twain drivers for both the camera and the card reader. Then I loaded PS. I selected the card reader twain driver because I can't connect to my camera....yet. When I open RAW files with PS (which become TIFF if I understand this correctly) it has several box that pop up. First it says "Building image lists" then "Extracting images", then I get an error message. :? I'm confused. I've tried reloading the software to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Your getting an error message because,. as I said, PS can not open or convert the raw files made by the 1D (or any Canon camera)
The 1D RAW files have a tiff extension.. that's just what they are called.. but they aren't tiffs at all. (No clue why Canon did it that way.. needless to say they changed this method with later cameras)
So.. you should ignore the twain stuff in PS.... and use the Canon software.. File Viewer Utility I think it is that comes with the 1D to open and convert the files that your 1D creates.
Am I getting closer? :)

First of all I want to thank you for your help... :oops: ....I think I'm proving the truth of your signature.
The disks I received with the camera are the Canon EOS Digital Solutions disk and the photoshop 5.0 LE disk. Is there another one? The solution disks loads the twain driver for the camera, card reader, and directly connecting the camera to the computer. :cry: I'm not sure what else I need. HELP!
Thanks again. :wink:

No.. PS 6.0 will not do it either.. the ONLY PS that supports raw files is PSCS ( version eight )
On your solutions disk .. there SHOULD be a program called "File Viewer utility" or "Zoombrowser" that will do all you need to convert the images to a format that any version of PS can then use.
If you don't have this on your CD ( ? ??? ?).. you should be able to download it from Canon...
If you are looking to buy something (many do as the Canon software is not allways the easiest thing to work with) you may want to look at "BreezeBrowser" by "Breezesys"
It will do a great job,. doubles as a very hadny file browser.. and RAW utility,. and cost only $50.00

You want "Software Applications and Updates "
...and Breezebrowser;
