I do realise that this is a predominantly Canon forum but I would like to ask about a couple of Panasonic cameras if possible.
The cameras are the FX100EBK and the FX12EB-K. The thing I cannot get my head round is the zooming. It claims that the 35mm equivalent is 28-100 on one of them and 35-105 on the other. However there are then claims that with the Extra Optical Zoom this increases dramatically.
I only use DSLR`s myself so I am at a bit of a loss with all this. Or should I just tell him to get a G9 !
Any help much appreciated.
Thank you.

The focal length equivalents are simply a function of sensor size (like multiplying a 50mm by 1.6 for a 20D). The "extra optical zoom" must be an add-on teleconverter, increasing focal length.
Please use more informative thread titles. Everyone needs "help".

By what you say, Super tele performance is what you desire the most, so maybe a G9 is not the answer. I don't know Panny's line up, maybe checking DP review dedicated forum will help u. Cheers!

are you sure the claims are not that with the extra digital zoom it increases dramatically?
the g9 has a 6x optical zoom which is the 35 equiv to 35-210. i think the g9 has digital zoom that will increase this; however, it is not good practice to use digital zoom.
there are other p/s out there with greater optical zooms than the g9

dunno what the budget is but a panny TZ3 is a very nice P&S too with 10x optical. You must avoid digital zoom. The IQ suffers too much.
