I was looking at buying a generic wireless shutter release from ebay like http://cgi.ebay.com/Wireless-Remote-Control-for-Canon-Rebel-XT-XTi-RS-60E3_W0QQitemZ310005664617QQihZ021QQcategoryZ64345 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
this one. It looks kind of questionable, but I saw a decent review once for a similar one and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with anything like this.

I paid for one from one of these HK vendors and received a box with no release in it. Paypal would not refund and I'm currently chasing through my bank for a refund.

I have that one but for the 30D/40D/5D and works well. Easy to use and decent build IMO. There are quite a few with that model here.

I have the Phottix branded one, which looks exactly the same for the 20D/30D and it works great. The quality is quite good too compared to the flash triggers. Plastics on it is pretty decent. Never had a problem with range at all, even without the antenna extended. Though the receiver is quite big, but the cord is long enough that I can have it mounted on the hotshoe mount with some velcro.

I have one called OMG! SR1- purchased from ebay HK- some Kea photos, if i recall correctly. Cost only 3 USD plus shipping- works decently :)

It came with instructions only in Chinese. Fortunately, it is not exactly brain surgery to set one up. It seems to work just fine and for under $10 including shipping, it was worth a try.

Thanks Tommy. I wasn't aware of an alternative to the generic single unit remotes.

Phottix works wonderfully. Changing the batteries if I ever need to on the receiver end would not be as easy as the cactus versions. Then again, I doubt you'd be changing batteries before the actual unit craps out.
