My first basketball game of the season... I only had one transmitter/reciever combo so I could only take one strobe (AlienBees B800).. Had it at about 1/4 power and shot at 800 iso, but it wasn't high enough up.. Was casting some irritating shadows. They've got a second (much smaller) weightroom upstairs in the same corner I had my AB, so i'm going to ask if I can put it up there and aim it down towards the court. I don't know what to do about the opposing side of the gym (for even lighting), the stands are always packed where I would like to set it up.. But, I was pleased with how the photos looked for the most part. I've just got to get better at taking them.. Football is so much different!

Warm ups w/o the AB

Question: What can be done with this photo? I've tried cropping it different sizes, but it never looks right.. Should I just trash it? (face isn't fully visible, 2nd hoop is visible) I really like it, but I can't get it edited correctly..

Thanks for the help!

Good shots for highschool gyms. The lighting in most HS's is horrible. Where do you live at in the 7C area? I live in VB.

Thanks.. I'm in Hampton myself. I shoot for Hampton's yearbook, and sell photos to the kids/parents/etc.. That gym is horribly lit.. I was talking to one of the photogs from VaPreps, and he said Hampton and Denbigh's gyms are just terrible.. I tend to believe him lol I tried my 70-200 2.8 last year with no flash, and never came out with anything worth keeping.. These strobes are the best investment i've made so far, just trying to get the hang of them.

What schools do you shoot over there? That side is looking really good so far, even though the season is really just getting underway!

Twill,

I miss football as well :). Your shots show why it can be so difficult to shoot with flash (mainly the shadows). Your last picture is good but the background kills the image IMHO. The stands look like they were packed, was there any way you could have shot from the corner to have the crowd as the background?

I would like to drive up and shoot one of the Hampton games and meet with you. Let me know when there will be a good game and your schedule will support.

I'll let you know Matt.. I'll be at the Woodside game on Friday, but I don't know if you'd want to drive all the way up there lol Most likely it'll be at the Christmas Tournament (24th-26th), but i'll drop you a PM when I get situated.

Hopefully they'll let me use the window from the upstairs weightroom (small 3x3 hole in the wall ) which would kill most of the shadows since the strobe will be aimed down onto the court from above.. I'm going to order another receiver for another strobe to even the lighting out and try and shoot from the baseline, but until then i'm gonna try and stick to the sideline.. Maybe directly underneath the strobe this time? Thanks for the idea!
