Why not try sending them an email and ask for a specific delivery date?

Its amazing that some companies get away with bs like that.

How can they be *temporary out of stock* for an item that has not yet shipped from the manufactor????

I would not order anything with a company like that!

Well that response from the company is about as close to weasel worded nonsense as I've ever seen. And a close read shows they actually make no promises whatever. They also seem to be very close to outright misrepresentation. If that isn't a red flag I don't know what is. I would look elsewhere to do business.

I called them as well and they said the 20th

Oh, yes, they'll have it on the 20th. Absolutely.

They didn't say which month.

If you read closely, nowhere does that vendor claim that they have the camera in stock. "Available" might mean sometime this century.

I have an order placed for a 20D about three weeks ago and my dealer advised that it "should" be at their store by September 14 or 15 according to Canon Canada.

I knew it had to be BS.

Is that at Camera Canada?

Some vendors engage in this kind of pre-release activity, and it is called "overhanging the marketplace." When a new product is coming out, and if the vendor is not sure how fast it is going to take off, they sprinkle some teasers like that into their advertising in order to test the water.

If they had a wild demand from consumers, then they might increase the size of the first order of the new product from the manufacturer. If they get a zero demand from consumers, then they might delay the first order to see what happens.

The more reputable vendors don't dabble into this activity very much. They have managers who study the market more closely without having to play so many games.

My suggestion: If you don't like those activities, then take your business to the vendors that suit you.

If you absolutely gotta' have one from 'first ship' don't hang around any of the online or mail vendors. Go to a good, local reputable dealer that has demonstrated in the past that they get a least a few units on 'first ship' day, and get in line.

You won't get a better price elsewhere, since *no one* will be discounting them right away, and you will not get rooked by an 'any day now' scheme from some online/mail order dealer. The folks that were taken in by those schemes will still be waiting for their cameras in November, while those of us that went to local, reputable camera shops will have been using ours since this coming week.

BTW, Canon is shipping 'first ship' 20D's out TODAY, via FedEX (some Saturday delivery to those stores that will be open tomorrow to receive) for availability over the counter on Monday, the 13th.

Be there, or be square...

I'll let you know where I get my 'first ship' units *after* next week. 8)

How do you know this for sure. ALL stores I have talked to say that NO ONE has given them a solid day, but many reps have mentioned th the stores, "late next week"

My I ask a stupid question: does it really matter if you get the cam on the 13th or the 20th (or even a couple of weeks after that).
