Does anyone know of a document that one can download showing how to use the 580EX II ? or even what settings are available on this flash and how to get to them ?

The manual can help you on that.

Do you not have the instruction manual, or are you looking for something more?

The manual is here in pdf .

If you are like me , you will convert to document and print larger - about 28 pages but will shrink down if you are selective and don't what to big a font .
I ordered a blue crane video on it but it only covers the 430 and 580 - was told other than water proofing , MOST difference are just improvements - I E- metal foot instead of plastic . PC socket added .
For someone like me - I should learn to use 580 and then the improvement will kind of fall into place .

I think for me i need to see pictures with the explantion - like a before and after shot to fully understand what the individual settings mean. The link provided above by k9trainer is perfect. Once i get to see what a setting does it sticks with me.
We (my wife and I) did our first wedding last Sunday and looking at the pics afterwards shows the areas that we need to concentrate on such as lighting issues. The typical one is beeing inside the church taking a pic of the bride coming in (dark vs bright). We also need to strike a balance on preventing too much flash in the face (bounce flash not being an option...) while trying to get a decent exposure shot of the B&G....I suppose practice practice practice !!!

The manual that Canon produces for the 580 ex II is a sorry excuse for a manual. It's a shame third party individuals have to produce detailed manuals for Canon Speedlites.

i've read the manual and found it of little help. If you find something with pics and explanations, I'd be curious to see it too! Right now mine it set to the flashes 'auto' and I shoot mostly in av and i bounce it off the ceiling. That alone is far better than anything i've gotten using the onboard flash
