I like #2 best but #1 is a close second, I would just back down the highlights on it a bit.

#1 is terrific with #3 a close second. Love them both.

I prefer 3. I like the coloring better than 2.

I prefer number one.
Why did you not edit the whole image? I think that would be better :)

I agree with smoothing the face a little bit, but I like the coloring in the 3rd image the best!

Depending on what software you use, that would be different. But in photoshop you can run levels/curves on it and turn down some of the highlights. Lightroom has a tone curve built right in it. Search google for 'photoshop levels/curves'

I like 4 and the original. Just do a little PP on the faces and they'll look great.

#2 seems to be best. The other ones show a bit PP overdone (color bleeding, and the b&w version is a bit dark.) I agree that he looks cold, so maybe you can try to reduce sharpening ...
My 2cents.

by the way does anyone know how i got the swirling effect on the background? i think it was on the mask with a magic wand selection? would that produce that effect with a gradient masked?

2. I also like 1, except for the greenish hue on part of his face.

Could be you had a "feathered" selection. If you are selecting with any kind of lasso you should set feather to a lower number. Wouldn't be that if you used a magic wand though.

im quite surprised by the different edits you have done from looking at the original. what techniques are you using? or they photoshop actions you are running over the image? would be interested in knowing. I like no. 2 from the original edits the best

yes really transforms a boring image to something interesting... it explains on my flickr what I did click tobiahtayo.com..
but from memory it was the free actions from this site...
I ran the soft focus then the 300 then the lomo 2 action then dodge and burn etc and add the background with a gradient...
mainly the actions though which are wonderful
