My left ear is somewhat troublesome again, not so long ago it blocked up completely and I couldn't hear nada for about a week, before I used twenty eight Q tips to clear it.

Last night I had a bath, and some water must've got down my ear, melted some wax and re-set it, as I now can't hear jack in my left ear. I'm going to avoid the Q tip this time

Just to be sure: you are aware that the Q-tips should be taken off the ear after cleaning, right? :)

You need to get that thing flushed. Go to the doc and have them flush your ear. You'll be amazed what they get out if you're having symptoms similar to what you're describing. You want to be careful messing with Q-Tips in your ears. You can do more damage than good.

You should never use q-tips to clean inside the ear. The general rule is "Never put anything smaller than your elbow inside your ear." Just too many things that can get damaged. If you are having that much difficulty with ear wax you really should go to the Dr and have it removed. There are also ear wax removal kits that do a good job, but not on large amounts of wax.

I had a similar problem to you about a year ago and finally went to the doctor. He used a water pic (like what you use on your teeth) and flushed it out in less then a minute...worked like a charm.

You could always try ear candling.
But supposedly it doesn't work.
Anyways, I love using q-tips.

If it is stopped up that bad go to the Doctor and have it rinsed out. It makes a big difference. I have to go at least once a year to have my ears cleaned out as I wear a hearing aid in each ear and wax buildup is a real problem for me.

The Doc is right of course.

i wear ear plugs 90% of the time while im at work (im actually at my office once in a while haha) and ive thought of doing the rinsing as well. ive noticed that they feel a little different once in a while due to the ear plugs.

It's only in one ear, which is rightly absurd. I tried hopi candles the last time, worked dubiously.
Off to the doc so!

...I used twenty eight Q tips to clear it.

How'd you get them all to fit? I have trouble using more than four.

My goofy ear story - I hope this isn't the case with you: (100% true)

In my last year of university, I lived in a big old house with three other guys. In November, one of the guys, I'll call him Tony, said he lost hearing in his right ear. We told him to get it checked, but he never got around to it. We did notice that at times during a conversation he would say "pardon" or "what" and swing his head around so he could hear with the left ear.

Around February one of the guys got a 24-hour type flu; he was sick all day and missed school. Then the next guy got the same thing, then me and finally it came to Tony. What lasted on us for only a day, had Tony curled up on his bed for three. He could hardly talk was shivering like crazy. He finally went to the doctor accompanied by one of the other guys.

During the exam, the doc asked Tony if he had tubes in his right ear. Tony said no. Doc asked if he was sure. Tony said positively no tubes. Doc got the big bright light and long tweezers, reached into his ear canal and pulled out a waxy, crusty pen cap. (not the piece that clips to your pocket, but the stopper end like on a 49-cent Bic. )

"Hey! I can hear" shouts Tony, and then tells the doc that he must've been scratching his ear with the end of his pen and had the top come off.

Doc gave Tony something for the flu and sent him packing. We laffed our a$$es off and now it's 23 years later and I still can't tell this story without a smirk on my face.

Anyway Psychobiker - hope nothing like this is happening in your case and you get you ear cleared up really soon.

BillsBayou,
Some of you responses/comments are absolutely perfect. To the OP stick a wick in the ear, light it, and you will be the hit of the Christmas party.

I used to be plagued with ear wax until my doctor told me to put just one or two drops of olive oil in my ears (with a dropper) every week or ten days. It works like a charm and I haven't been troubled with wax since. (He also said, of course, never to use Q-tips).

Olive oil also helps prolong the life of the wick

Yes, that's what the olive oil does - and it works.
