View Full Version : RAW Convertors

Having a problem, hope someone can suggest a solution... I shot a wedding this past weekend and am trying to start processing shots. I shot everything in RAW, and am trying to use the EOS Viewer Utility that came with the 20D to convert to JPG and start getting some work done. Every time I try to open the program, I get an error message that says "Server is busy - Action cannot be completed because the other program is busy". It gives an option to click "Switch To", "Retry", or "Cancel" (cancel is greyed out and can't be clicked). Clicking on switch to or retry does nothing, except bring up the same error.

So, has anyone had this problem before and know what might be causing it? Or is there another program that I can use to convert from RAW to JPG relatively easily?

I have Elements 6.0 and there when I try to open the CR2 files, it opens a convertor, but it is so slow that I doubt I'll ever finish processing the 500 or so shots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what the EOS Viewer Utility is, sounds like it is only a program to "view" RAW files within windows.

Did your 20D come with DPP - Digital Photo Professional? - If so use this.

if you do not have this, download IrfanView which has a CR2/CRW RAW converter.

This must be the first time to shoot in raw. All raw images must be converted to another format ( jpg, tif, dng ) before you can do any post processing. DPP came with your 20D and is Canon's raw converter. The converter in Elements 6 should work just fine also. I am not sure about slow, is your computer up to date? It does take a little time to convert Raw images, but the flexibility is worth it.

Definitely install and use DPP to convert the RAW files,. play with it for a while. It takes a little time invested, but once done, and you are familiar, it can even save time in the long run.

EOS Utility has two functions: to transfer photo files from your camera to your computer via a direct USB connection and/or to facilitate remote computer control of the camera. It does not convert RAW files. For this use DPP, ZoomBrowser or any one of more than two dozen third party applications.

Unless I'm crazy, the program I'm talking about does indeed convert from RAW - I've had it for 2+ years up til about a week ago it worked just fine. So no, this isn't the first time I've shot RAW. Here's a screen shot of what I've been using, if it isn't called EOS Viewer Utility then I don't know what to call it. If it is truly a different program then can someone tell me what it is?

Anyways, I did find a the DPP cd that came with the camera, so I'm trying to load it now.

Unctep,

That programme is not something I recognise at all. I've just gone to my Eos Utility and zoombrowser to double check because I only use DPP for my CR2 conversions.

Was it something Canon offered before DPP? Anyone?

Was it something Canon offered before DPP? Anyone? A copy was on the CD with my 300D years ago, & yes, it will convert RAW files. But it's pretty underengineered & hard to use IMO. Better to use DPP.

The program shown above has worked ok for me, I'm sure there are better programs out there, but I've gotten used to this one. I did load the DPP and it seems to work just as easily... not sure why I didn't load it before now. Thanks for suggesting it - I'll just have to get used to using it!

If you installed DPP from the disc that came with your 20D, it's probably a pretty old version (1.0 or 1.6 maybe?). I'd suggest you update it from the Canon site. The current version is 3.2 and I'm sure you will find it much improved and with more features (Picture Styles, Noise Reduction, Lens Corrections and better sharpening).

DPP offers more options, and has a better workflow IMO.
EVU uses RIT (Raw Image Task) for converting raw files (IIRC) and can come closest to the look / colors of a jpg produced by the camera.

I sometimes still use EVU because of that.

I get the same message sometimes with different apps in Vista UN. I usually have to reboot or log off and back on to free up whatever Vista needs.
