I am getting vivitar 285 HV for the EOS 300D. It should arrive soon.

I should also look for Wein Safe Sync adapter. Is it this one?

Also... do you know how cosistent these flashes are in terms of the shock they give to the camera??? I am bying it used, and it worked ok on the 300D before. Is it gonna be safe just to mount it, or it can still kill the shutter after a few thousands flashes?

Scott Berger where are you? You have PhD in this stuff!

Dont know about the Vivitar, but I can tell you that after 3 fried Sunpaks, and 1 burned out Safe Sync, I did not have very good luck running a non Canon flash on my Rebel. I know of one person using the Sunpak on his 10D, which has a PC adaptor that is integral in the camera, but I had no luck using the Hot shoe/PC adaptor. My hot shoe works fine with a 550 Canon flash.

Check this link:

Looks like the 285 is borderline. I have an Omnibounce 40D that I use on my DRebel occasionally. I tested the voltage on it and it never seemed to exceel 5.5V. The site claims 6.2V but I have never been able to get a reading that high on mine.

I can't speak to the reliability or trigger voltage of that flash. That is the correct safe sync to use however. I would'nt use a non Canon dedicated flash without it.

Scott

Now I've read that you can build your own safe sync for 2-3 bucks :o

Wein Safe sync I'd imagine uses similar mechanism, right? And with 4 bucks, I'd be saving quite a bit of money, considering that in canada the wein sync is about 90USD.
