Has anyone done any Infrared pictures for a wedding? I have seen one picture on google but wanted to sell if anyone else thought this was a cool idea for a wedding?

Or should it just be kept for landscape?

It's definitely something that will stand you out from other photographers. I like the idea for certain photographs during the wedding.

I still dont get the whole deal with filters and mods for IR photography

I want something like your pictures where they are blueish and white but I heard that you do that with a filter or something? Im confused...

Originally I planned on getting a cheap 10d and converting it

I dont understand how this works? is it photoshop and do a selective coloring? or is there some type of instrument?

yes please tell us... is it equipment or processing

mrerico

Its either a filter, post processing, or they modified their camera to take IR pics

Chandler.

Equipment. There is a built-in filter over the sensor (I think it's called the anti-aliasing filter, but I could be wrong) that blocks IR rays. If you remove it, you can shoot "Infrared" pictures.

this is camera canon 20D converted to infrared here http://www.lifepixel.com/

mrerico

Was it worth the conversion?

Can you post some more pictures? maybe some more people pictures

Very very smart.
Never thought of IR application at marriage which by default has a lot similar to IR such as mysterious things you don't otherwise see...
Loved them, show us more.

From what I hear, you can photoshop to get something SIMILIAR to these but no cigar. :]

with a filter you need long exposure times... is the same true with a camera mod?

I dont think you do with the camera mod..I think thats the upside of converting

Two questions. Do you use a filter or have you modded a camera? Do you colorize the sky in PS?

Thanks

1)modded a camera (no any filter)
2) only follow this instruction http://www.lifepixel.com/digital-infrared/digital-infrared-photography-instructions.html

Is there a certain way you have to take pictures (ie custom settings)? Or can you just go about like you are using a normal camera and keep the regular settings?

With a modified camera, your settings are, more or less, the same as if you were shooting with an un-modified camera. You have to be careful of exposure though as what you think would be a proper exposure using visible light may either under or over expose you shot in IR. It's best to keep a close watch on the histogram.

Something else that REALLY makes the post processing much easier is to shoot in RAW. Correcting the WB in RAW is so much easier than when working with a JPG (plus you have more data to work with).

I LOVE IR IMAGES, Converted a brand new Canon 10D back in the day to IR and still use it. Truly fun and makes normal shots MUCH more interesting.

I will try and dig up some of my IR images and post them. For the most part we use IR for venue shots and album design not so much for portrait photography.

I cannot for the life of me work out whats going on in the second photo. Is it just me or does it look like she is floating! Where are her feet? I know i may regret asking this but Im stumped.

AdamR,
She jumped, he took the shot while her feet were up in her dress during her jump.
I agree it gives a great "spooky" feel to the image as it makes her look like a lost bride in a world devoid of natural color awaiting her always "soon to be coming" groom.

Awesome shots man!!
Always wanted to convert my 350d to IR, will do it myself as I'm based in South Africa and there are no suppliers here that do it.
No too difficult though , just need a steady hand and some time. :)

Hm...I'm seriously considering this. But I need a backup before I use more money to buy a camera to convert. 2009 should be a fun year.

mrerico
10th of January 2008 (Thu), 02:08
buy a 10d and do it

_aravena
10th of January 2008 (Thu), 02:12
I would, but I need a 30D or 40D as my primary, a new lens whether it be the cheaper 85 F1.8 or expensive 17-55 IS. Then I can get another camera, maybe, for the IR. I have Tax season and a graduation shoot. Who knows? *ponders*

Wait, never mind. I'm getting married, she won't let me. :( At least I can afford a honeymoon.

thats cool..

lol is it going to be wierd hiring a photographer for your wedding? Who you thinking of hiring? Just wonderin

_aravena

My cousin is doing it and the photographer that did her wedding is assisting for free. So it's all good. While I'm not sure on her pics, I know he's excellent. So for the guys, my cuz is with me and for my wife to be, I'm having him with her. Since those are the more important photos, I want the best there.

I'm not even allowed to touch a camera though.

i have a book on CS3 and it has a little section about 'infrared film simulation'

basically you use the B&W adjustment

then adjust the settings like this:

red: 0 (no adjustment)
yellow: +150%
green: +300%
cyans: +150%
blues: -40%
magentas: +30%

that will pretty accurately get the IR effect, although if you want a blue sky just erase the layer wherever you want the color to show though.. hope this helps.

edit: there are a few more steps with regards to using levels adjustment to get it quite right, ill post them if anyone wants.

i dont have many landscape shots, so can someone try this on a few of them and post it up, thanks!
