View Full Version : WORLD WIDE PHOTO WEEK: PART 91 -- Days of Our Lives
BLS
15th of December 2007 (Sat), 14:12
The theme for this week is "Days of Our Lives." This can be interpreted as shots showing our daily lives, but different interpretations are always welcome.
Here are the rules:
1. Shots need to be taken between sunrise Monday (Dec. 17) and sunset the following Sunday. Because this activity is supposed to encourage us to get out and shoot, please no old shots from your archives. Crummy shots and art are equally welcome -- just get out & shoot, and then share!
2. Post your shots at any time during the week.
3. Post a maximum of two shots if you're embedding them at POTN. You can post more than two if you link to shots that are not hosted by POTN, but keep within POTN rules. Also keep within POTN rules about size and limit the size of each shot to a maximum of 800px on its longer side.
That's it! Have fun!

Thank you Barb! :D :D
I like sticking with the 'whole week' idea. So many times, I can't fit it into just the weekend. :D

Cool ... I used to enjoy playing Chess with my dad. He had an old, proper wooden set and big cardboard ... erm ... board :-) For some reason I never enjoyed Draughts tho!

Crissa -- My internet connection has been slow lately, so your picture took forever to load. But I could see your text about a snowy day game of chess. I imagined a shot of chess players sitting in a park with snow falling around them, and thought, "Wow, that's dedication." Then I saw that the game was indoors, and it made a lot more sense to me!
My Dad and I played chess. Our set was exactly like yours! Brings back memories.

Most 'days of my life' I have two shortcut routes I take from the new St Pancras International, where my train comes and goes from these days, to my office. Sometimes I wonder if I should just jump onto a fast train to Paris or somewhere for an adventure and forget my desk :-)
Often during the mornings I will walk in along the old canal. At the moment it is dark when I leave so I go via a safer, better lit route on the way back. Whatever, it is a 10-15 minute walk depending on mood and route. I tried to make these look 'old stylee' but not that successful :-) Used the G9.

Dave -- Looks as though you have an interesting walk. I like the B&W. Are they conversions or in-camera B&W's?
While Crissa was having snow, we were having freezing rain. The ice got quite thick on trees and power lines. We lost some tree branches. Fortunately, we didn't lose power, and the roads didn't get icy. The birds seemed happy that we filled their feeder in anticipation of the storm. This shot was taken through a window, so it looks a bit strange.

Its been so cold lately that I haven't taken any shots. Chess brings back memories but I can't even beat the computer on normal mode =( and to think I use to be good when I was little. The black and white images certainly have a look to them, it's always interesting to see people's conversions. And for the birds, how far away were you? I loved everyone's picture. Now does anyone else have more =)

OK... This last week before Christmas we spend baking and making food gifts.
These wreaths have been a tradition in my family for about 15 years. Easy to make, and delicious.
This year we made 20 of them.

Melted marshmallows and butter, cornflakes, and green food color. :D

Cat -- I ate a wreath like those once. The one I ate was small, just a few inches in diameter, like a cookie. The slant in your first shot works well.

ooo -- I was about six feet from the birds with my 17-55 set @ 40mm. The feeder is rather close to the window, but the birds don't mind -- especially whenever they're hungry.
And the saga of life continues ... I took my mother to her ophthalmologist, who removed a stitch he had put in her eye during cataract surgery.

Ok, two more from my miserable life ... each lunchtime I go to a different place to eat and read the newspaper. Makes a nice break as my work is pretty hectic. Sometimes I meet up and sometimes I go along on my own. Monday I went to a different one, not shown, but Tuesday I went to Alpino and today to Indian veg :-)

Hi all! As always it is interesting and enjoyable to see the various interpretations on the theme. My comments:
Crissa - that chess shot hits so close to home! My son is really big into chess, he is a member of the chess team at his school. They have been competing in local tournaments almost every weekend this schoolyear and they are doing well. I think chess is great for kids, it exercises their minds and trains them to think analytically.
Dave - I think you did an excellent job with the B/W conversion. Very rich tonal range. St. Pancreas International" Why would they name it after a body organ? ;)
Barbara - that is a lovely shot. I lover the composition and DOF. Thoise little birds must be really cold, poor things. I hope your mom is doing well. That looks like a painful procedure....
Cat - This is the first time I have seen something like that. I think it is pretty neat, does it have a gummy texture? I love to cook with my son, maybe this is a recipe that we can work on sometime.
ooo - Looks like you're on the prowl on the city streets too :) That looks like a 1200mm that they have over there. Must be fun to play with.
Dave - what do they serve at Alpino's? That Indian Veg place looks interesting, must be yummy.
Crissa - this is my wife's favorite set. She is an Occupational Therapist and she loves kids dearly. Thanks for sharing!
My photo to follow soon.

Taken yesterday, early morning at the corner of Allen and DeLancey, Lower Manhattan. I pass here everyday whilst bringing my son to school. That's a food stall being deployed, they still have some 12 big city blocks to go.

Dave - what do they serve at Alpino's? That Indian Veg place looks interesting, must be yummy.
It is a very old cafe in islington. I dunno if you Get the UK Monopoly board over there but there is one card called 'The Angel Islington' which was very cheap and it used to be a really rough and run down area. These days it would be very expensive as now one of the trendiest areas.
This specific street is Chapel Market. Alpino used to be a bit Italian/Turkish flavoured in terms of food but now a Chinese guy runs it and it is more your traditional English greasy cafe, with just a few of the old menu items still there. The waitresses are very 'Eastenders' and so everyone is called 'darling', babe', etc :-) Good place to sit and read the paper in peace. Grub is decent. Indian Veg is an awesome place. All you can eat for $6 and really good flavours and selection.
A good project would be to record all the greasy cafes in London. A long project that would never end as new ones open and old ones close all the time. I have a friend with a project to record every tube station and one interesting image from nearby!

ooo -- That lens is amazing. Wonder how much it weighs. Makes my outfit look lightweight.
Dave -- The sign at Indian Veg says that the restaurant uses pulse-based cooking (I think that's what it says). Never heard of it. What is it?
Crissa -- Your clients seem to be enjoying themselves. I enjoyed these shots.
Pio -- Twelve blocks to go? No wonder they need to start early. The good news is that the stall seems to push easily.

I have a nephew in Surrey, but I have never been to London.
I personally think it is the greatest city in the world and I have visited a few. I kinda have a love/hate relationship with it. i lived there for 5 years and was glad to leave. veryt hectic and people can be rude and ignorant, like many cities. But for history, culture and general target rich shooting it's hard to beat.

Pulses are like lentals so I suppose they use them a lot. I don't really know. Is very healthy tho'. Inside is cool ... there are lots of famous people who have left signed photo's and all kinds of articles and newspaper cuttings promoting the cafe and it's approach to food.
So, as we approach another weekend, and a seasonal/festive one at that, at least for the 'Christian nations', I wonder what we should do as a theme? We had event suggested a weeks or two back?

I am taking Digital Photography I . I have to take it as a pre-requisite for some other classes I want to take. Oh, and green eggs and ham is coming this year for Christmas and the Curios George books were still in the bookcase. ;)

Mike -- Nice series. I especially liked your 2nd one. I looked at it a long time -- I love looking around children's rooms with all of their intriguing toys.
Event sounds like a winner even though I might be hard-pressed to find something. I'll post the new theme tomorrow.
If anyone has other ideas, please post them so we can keep them in mind for the future.

The saga of life still continues . . .
We went on one of our regular shopping forays to two old specialty shops in a nearby urban area. One shop sells coffee, tea, herbs, spices, dried fruit, spiced nuts, homemade biscotti, unusual marmalades, etc. Here's a wide angle shot that lets you look around part of the shop. That's our coffee that the owner is bagging.
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/Betty2.jpg
The other shop is a sort of delicatessen/convenience store that caters to the German community. It sells German lunch meats, sausages, cheeses; hard-to-find ingredients for German cooking such as spaetzle, hot paprika, sauce mixes, etc.; and German sweets. Here's a behind-the-counter view of the owner filling an order for another customer.

So, okay, the link's not perfect. But it's good enough. It works.
Don't know what I do wrong. I click on the Insert Link button, then hit ctrl-v to insert my copied address. The Insert Link window always gives me a duplicate prefix of "http://" that I delete. Then I click on Okay. Then, in the text of the message, it always gives me a duplicate address within the URL tags.

grab your link
come back to this thread (for example)
type the word you will use for the link - the placeholder for your link
then highlight that word (or highlight an existing word you want to use)
then click on the link button - get rid of the http:// that defaults there - paste your link in click OK
should work fine
try a couple of practice runs in here - no-one will mind.
