Okay well, i've had my website up for like...6months now maybe...and today i go on "Account Suspended" ... whatever...maybe i forgot to pay?....nope it was paid, checked my credit card online.....Then i go to my hosts site "webhostcentral.net". .... "Account Suspended" .... he closed down his hosting, without notifiiying me, and deleted my site!!!!!! so, okay, i have most of it on my computer at home, thats fine, but registered the domain for me, and i cant contact him, and figure out how to transfer it. i called the company who supposedly hosted his site (1and1.com) and they couldn't help me. WHAT THE HELL?? what should i do?

/end rant

You need to check if the domain is in your name. See here: click (http://www.whois.net/)

If it is you can communicate with the domain registrar and hopefully if you provide proof of ownership then they will give you access. You also need to get some more hosting space. When you have control of the domain then you need the name server addresses from the new hosting company. You add the name server addresses within the domain control panel at your registrar web site. After anything from an hour to 48 hours then the domain will be pointing to your web space. meanwhile you can upload all your web site files.

They are one of the largest hosts and reputable. No doubt the guy you dealt with had one of their reseller accounts. If the domain is registered in your name then you can transfer the domain away from 1and1 if necessary ... have you checked that?

Doesn't say that for me. It looks like 1and1 owns your domain name. You can buy new web space off them and then the domain will work again. Seeing as they own it i would just let it go and come up with another name that you own and control. I buy all my domains off 000domains.com and then point them at my server. I don't like all my eggs in one basket! You must own any domain. It is a key business asset. Seems like you got some bad advice.

You could clarify with 1and1 if you own the domain or if they do. If you do then ask if you can change the name servers to point to your new web space (you will need to set up the new account somewhere). If they won't do that, then you will have to get them to release the domain to another registrar so you control it.

+1 for the dyke. Own yourself. I lost my domain once and got it back after a parker dropped it. Phew. Took a year!

Maybe drop the photography for now and register that site until you get 'er back up. then point one to the other.

Yeah, but, all my business cards say my address on it. It's not good.

And this is exactly why I've registered all my domains myself and host via godaddy, probably the biggest and most reputable company for web hosting out there. I just dont trust others when it comes to this stuff.

I'm sorry to hear about what has happened, and I hope you are able to get your site back up and running. I couldnt imagine what you must be going through. Good luck.

Business card reprints are cheap ... you can even do decent quality ones at home these mdays if you are short of cash or time. I'd definately get a new domain. Put it down to experience.

Honestly, not that many, but the thing is, my first gallery is opening on the 4th...and ..well...it had my website name on a lot of the stuff there...i might register a new domain right now...and get new hosting...any suggestions on hosts? and any creative names for my domain? (old one was scotteisenphotography.com) this one can be anything

Yep. Never, ever, ever let your hosting company register the domain for you. That's just asking for trouble.

I handle all my registrations myself via dotster.com and rent server space to host them from bluehost.com. I've owned several domain names since 1996, and they've always been in my name, and my name only.

Seems he doesn't own the domain so irrelevant. he needs to look forward. i've told him what he needs to do re. his existing domain.

Use your name and forget the 'photography' if you can still get it. Otherwise you got the problem millions have - a useful domain name is very hard to get these days! Everyone should buy their own name even if they don't use it.

All the companies mentioned: 000domains, dotster and godaddy are reputable for finding a domain. Get a .com ;-) All my domains, my own and clients, are via 000domains except for Uk ones which are with Joker (who also do .com's, etc)
