I got my grip kit in yesterdays mail and I have to admit that when I opened the package I had second thoughts about my purchase but once I put the kit on the camera it was a total transformation. I can now hold the camera steady which is something I had trouble doing without the grip. I can also shoot one handed. The lens ring is purely aesthetic but I couldn't believe how it improved the looks of the camera. The kit is money well spent and I recommend it to anyone with a G7-G9 camera.

Hi,
I'm considering the purchase of a G9 as a portable alternative to my Canon SLR gear.
Can you elaborate on this grip kit you're referring to? Where you do purchase a kit. Lastly are there any photos of one mounted on a G9?
Thanks in advance,
Steph

Siegfried's revised his site recently (mycanong7.com) and the photos of Richard's accessories are not as complete as they once were yet. Check these links out for some better photos/reviews of the grip, thumb rest, black lens ring and hot shoe cover:

Yeah I got my G9 grip + thumbrest a couple days ago. At first I didn't remove the tape & just held it in place on the camera to see if I liked it. To be honest I did not and at first thought I might take a bath on a few bucks and just resell it for a discount.
But I went ahead and installed it, and lo & behold grip + thumbrest is a great fit. A very nice accessory. Now I can hold the camera in one hand and shoecorded flash off camera in another and feel totally confident in the grip.

Seems to be the opinion of all once they try it. :-)
I have the hot shoe cover also. It not only serves to protect the hot shoe from any kind of damage (the primary purpose), it looks very nice on the camera (same reason I decided to go with the black lens ring).

Something as simple as taking the camera out of a bag is more assured with the grip. I am loving mine more each day.

I do wish it is a matte/parkerized finish, instead of the shiny finish.

I thought I did at first too. But once I had the grip on for a while and then added the black lens ring, I found I really liked the subtle contrast.

I like the large grip part for the front, but I never did install the thumb ring. It seemed sort of out-of-place and covered up some of the button labeling. I don't guess I actually need to see those labels but... just seemed silly to stick something on that covered things up.
Is the thumb rest part really worth it for someone that does not have a remote flash and pretty much always uses 2 hands to hold the camera?

Nah its not necessary, but i'd give it a try if you already have it. It should pull off without problem if you don't like it.

Interesting. When I installed the thumb rest, nothing got covered up. Put it just above the trash can icon and almost flush with the upper left corner of the LCD.
Personally, I did find a positive difference after installing the thumb rest. Seems a slight change but an important one IMO. Maybe its just the way I hold the camera that allows it to give me an edge. But, as mentioned, if you have it, you might as well try it. My understanding is that it will come off without damaging the finish of your camera.
