Anyone got any shots from Sundays Race of Champions at Wembley, UK?
I did hear from another forum that Wembley have a no camera (SLR) rule that they were enforcing for this event.

Apparently there was a late relaxation of the "no professional kit" rule but that they would still prevent "excessive" amounts of gear from being taken in..
What their definition of excessive actually was, is open to interpretaion.
600 F4L IS and 1 Series?...err probably not :D

Awww, that's a shame, so probably no decent shots going to be doing the rounds then :(

They wouldn't let me in with a 350d and a bigma, I was told to check it (fat chance) or leave it my car.
They seem to consider any DSLR to be excessive.
Damn good racing though, even if it was bloody freezing.

I never understand this attitude, what exactly is there to lose from letting people take photographs. Its not as if we are all going to buy souvenir pictures and they'd lose sales!

BAH! I know someone on another forum who got in with a 350d, he had a press pass apparently I don't know if that makes a difference. But his pictures didn't even look that good (I could of done better).

It wasn't as if I was going to be in a great position to get "professional" shots.
If I'd been seated any higher they'd have had to stick a warning light on my head

No doubt all to do with marketing and the control of image rights.
Probably also to do with the fact that not everyone wants to take pictures, and big crowds + all seater stadium + someone waving around a camera and big lens is more than likely not a good mixture......

I went along to this event, took my camera (30D, 17-85is & 70-300is) didnt have a problem getting in! They had a look in my camera bag but didnt say anything.
I will post some pics up soon for you all.

I was unaware of this gay rule and walked in with my camera around my neck. I got pulled to one side and on the the 'officials' got called over. He told me it was writen in the small print on the back of the ticket. I had only just picked the tickes up from outsite the stadium and was told to put the camera in my bag and if I got caught with it he woudlnt recomment I argue.
Once I was in I had no hassle what so ever. I think the stewards where more interested in watching the racing than looking for cameras.

Hi Hope you like these, please comment as it's the first pics that i've posted.:)
I did get a little grief from one of the stewards due to the " White Professional lense " , just told him that was the only colour it came in. :D

Nice shots guys. I was there too!
I went in without any issues at all - my white lens didn't even raise an eyebrow so msut have been a bit hit and miss.
But I was sitting in the gods section so didnt get as good an angle on the track as I would have liked.
I am sorting through the shots tomorrow so will post some of the better ones - so far most are ruined by shivering - it was bloody cold!!
The compares kept asking everyone to make more noise - from what I could see there were two reasons why they couldnt hear us:
1. Clapping with gloves doesn't make as much noise
2. Everyone had low grade hyperthermia and chose living to cheering :-)
Great day though and some great racing.

I was at Wembley for the RoC. Was good fun just a shame there were a few too many empty seats for my liking plus I couldn't actually feel my toes after about 4pm lol.
I was searched on the way in, opened up the bag found my camera which I described as "point and shoot" haha. They said I couldn't use my white lens as that was professional but the little lens would be ok. Right. Anyway once in I was ok, no-one said anything and because it wasn't mega-packed in the grandstand I wasn't in anyones way. Photography wise though it was pretty cack, I was in the "pikey" seats which meant I was rather high up and being floodlit meant high ISO. I knew all this before I went but it doesn't make it any easier. I got a few shots nothing I'm actually happy with but still it was a good day and I got to see the new Wembley.
A few of my shots are here - http://www.ae-photography.co.uk/161207.html - if anyone's interested. I won't bother to post any directly in the forum since they kinda suck.
Roll on 2008
cheers

Some good shots there. :-D
What was that circuit made of? It looks like a proper tarmac surface. Surely they didn't lay a conventional tarmac surface just for that event did they?
I thought it was a ridiculous amount of work shifting tons of sand into stadiums for supercross events, but that appears nothing compared with this!

I went as well. Went in with my Crumpler Bunnyman, and as they were searching bags they saw my 350d/grip and 10-22mm and 100mm macro. They had a bit of a fuss but I got in after a bit of persuading. Lucky for me they didn't see the 100-400 I had in the lower secret compartment!
It was a very good event, but as everyone else has said - absolutely freezing! I'll post some pictures in a bit, but here's one of my favourites:

Got my 20D, 70-200 & vid cam in no problem, guy looked in my bag, all he coould see was a Ford Racing Cap stuffed on top and mumbled OK. Was just a bit to far away for any v good pics thou.
Not sure the stewards know quite what is what, we were asked twice while waiting to go through the ticket area if we had cans or bottles in our bags (nothing about still/video cameras), girlfriend replyed yes and was told she would have to throw them away when the other stewards searched her bag, on entry she showed the guy her bag and asked about throwing them away, his reply was a shrug with an "I dont know" and then "go through"

What was the cost to actually get in to the event? And I think the NO CAMERA rule was a complete joke.... Does anyone know the reason for that decision?? I've been to Paris 3 times to see it but was not so fussed about going to Wembley so didn't bother....

Welcome to "Keep Britain Frightened". Our government like to think that we are under constant threat, and of course there is no better sign of a terrorist that a "pro" camera, except maybe a tripod.

The costs varied from £25 up in the gods to £120. Like others I didn't bother to take my DSLR, I would have been stuffed if they had decided not to let me in with it as I had come up by public transport.
The reverse of the tickets says small cameras and mobile phones were permitted. I would say the "rule" was interpreted depending on the person doing the checking. A few rows in front of me there was someone with a Nikon and tripod, although the lens looked liked a standard kit lens.
I would suspect the rules, for want of a better word, a standard Wembley rather than anything laid down by the organisers.
Like Rob I have also been to Paris and used all my normal kit without any problems.
The atomosphere of the event seemed much more intense (if that's the right word!) in Paris compared to Wembley, probably due to the stadium being full!

What is the reason for not allowing cans or bottles in? Is that due to their well documented use by terrorists, or to force people to spend too much on what is being sold inside the stadium?

no its so u carnt use them as missiles to throw at the cars
from experience a plastic cup to the chest when travailing at 150 mph will leave a bad mark

Ahh I see. That must be why they banned professional cameras. A 600mm f/4 L through the windscreen doesn't bear thinking about.

I had a sad five minutes and worked out that it would have cost about £625 for basic costs, 3 people, not including meals, to get to London, stay overnight Saturday, watch the ROC from decent'ish seats and then get home to N Wales.
Last year 3 of us went to Paris and it was about £180 cheaper and we stayed in Paris four days!!!!!!!!!
RIP OFF Britain or what :evil:

That's so true. We just put up with it. If more of us went abroad then maybe enough of us would realize what things are like over here and do something about it (which would probably be to move abroad! ).

girlfriend & I did it for about half that and had four days there (staying 2 miles from the stadium), ok were on the top tier but still had good clear view of the whole track.

PS. which part N Wales you from? I'm near Rhyl

It's not really a question of people throwing things otherwise they'd stop people taking cans & bottles into circuits, which they don't.
It's because Wembley is a football stadium and glass bottles and cans are not allowed in due to some of the muppets who attend football matches. :)

I also went to the ROC. Was planning on taking my 350D and 70-300mm IS lens but decided otherwise after reading Wembley's "prohibited items" list!! - http://www.wembleystadium.com/events/ProhibitedItems/
Bloody stupid, do they think people are going to go to these big events that are held there and not take pictures to remember it by?
I travelled from Suffolk by train to get there so didn't want to run the risk of not being allowed in if I had my camera with me. Then bugger me, when I got in my seat there was a guy about 10 seats down with a DSLR camera and a huge great lense, looked like a sigma 300 F4 EX or something along those lines.
Also noticed the signs at the gates when you go through listing all sorts, even video cameras & camera's (no mention of "professional" camera's, just normal ones) then during the night you see hundreds of flashes from around the stadium?!?!? Oooh has someone snuck a camera in?? lol
