I think colors distract in this image. Try a BW only verions. It might look better.

I think 2.5" is too long of a shutter time for this type of water. It makes the water look too smooth.
Compositionally, I think the crop is crowding the falls in the left margin of the image and giving a inordinate amount of room to the large boulder in the lower right.
I would also disagree that the highlights are blown out. Yes, some small number of pixels are blown out and yes, the water does look over-exposed slightly, but no more so than the shadows being blocked up. So, the real culprit here is that the image has too much dynamic range. In order to improve that situation, Merge to HDR could have been employed, EXCEPT that Merge to HDR is messy if there is any movement between frames. So, it would be best to just wait for a day with softer lighting.

Thanks robert for the detail comments. This is not a cropped image. I also think that in the original, the water is good at least not this much blown up. I messed it up while post processing, I will be soon back with the original.

Can only agree that the second one is much, much better than the first. In the first picture, the brown and purple tones left in look grungy, I get the impression that the horizon tilts significantly from upper left towards lower right, the high contrast removes the softness that people typically seek in long exposures of flowing water, and there's nothing in the back half (especially the top right) of the picture that's pleasant to look at. The second picture, however, has rich and vibrant green folliage, the flowers on the right, the very wet-looking mossy rocks, a tremendous little bridge: all up a lot of variety of texture, a lot of interest. Water looks great at the top, but the contrast may be a bit too much under the bridge: looks to me like you brightened the water there.
Cheers,
Tony
