With rumors abound of a 1DS II announcement in the near future (Photokina?), wanted to get some feedback on your early estimates of where Canon will price this?

I was thinking between 7-8K but they did come in 1k lower on the Mark II.

My guess is 8K retail and 6.5-7K street price.

Ditto.. I would expect less than the original street of the 1Ds.. but not by much.

So, you're asking for a rumored price on a rumored camera?

It will be the same price as the 1DS is right now. This is normally the way Canon prices a new model that is replacing an existing one.

Cal CPS432

For example in Cdn. Dollars Last price of D30 - $3495.00 opening price of D60 $3495.00 - last price of D60 $2695.00 opening price of 10D $2495.00, last price of 10D $1995.00 opening price of 20D $1995.00 and so on. these would be approx street prices, from what I can recollect.

The 1DS sells to CPS members (Canon Pro Shooters) for about $8800.00 CAD right now, so expect a new model to be about that price.

I think it will be slightly less.and they may have to lower the price iven a little more depending what else comes out on the market. You can buy two 20D's fopr what the D30 originally cost. Prices will drop some as an incetive tho make you decide to buy

I am in Canada - the prices I have stated are in Canadian Dollars not US Dollars.

What makes you think that Canon needs to drop their price to give you incentive to buy? They are selling all the product that they can bring to market and cannot come close to filling all of the backorders on any of the new camera models. On top of this, their only competitor of any merit, in the DSLR market is Nikon and right now they are falling farther and farther behind Canon, even if Nikon announces the rumoured D2X at Photokina they have no chance of getting this camera to market before next year at best. My sources have it that Canon will ship the "rumoured" 1DSMKII before the end of this year.

The D2X will bring Nikon up to the level that Canon reached 2 years ago with the 1DS. They are gradually falling behing Canon in Digital Camera technology after being the leader in this market just 4 years ago.

Canon needs to give a little incentive. For example I can afford to go out and buy a 1DMKII right now but I still own 2 ID's which are more enought camera for what I presently shoot. Do you think that every one is going to run out and purchase a 20D because it is being offered. i don't think so the market is becoming saturated. and this will eventually cause prices to drop. The supply will be grater than the demand.

I also agree thet Nikon is slowly falling further and further behind. Technolgy has to be affordable. otherwise it sits on the shelf

I agree that you and many others may have all the camera they need for what they are producing right now, but there are still many Pros that are making the transition from film to digital and many more amateurs that are just going digital. I believe the DSLR market will remain very active for at least two to three years more before we see a leveling off on sales, even then I believe the market will continue to grow, but at a slower rate of course.

There will be many D30/D60 users that will upgrade to the 20D not to mention lots of digital point and shoot users that will turn to the DSLR in order to obtain better results than the P & S cameras are capable of.

All in all 20D sales will most likely surpass sales of the 10D over the next year or so.

I wonder just how many people are going to fork out the cost of a 20D and a few lensesswitching over from point and shoot. I agree that digital sales will increase but I don't think that the slr market is going to keep up the pace that it has had for the laset few years. it will remain to be seen. I don't see folks spending that kind of money on a hobby.

In our area there are more Doctors and Lawyers with 1DS's than there are Pros. I see people moving into DSLR's from film slrs every day. Not only are these cameras tools for the Professional, but they are toys for the upper middle class consumer with a taste for technology. They are buying cameras, printers, and the stuff to go with them faster than the manufacturers can produce the products. Try and find an Epson 4000 printer right now, I know of six people waiting for one just in our area alone. The trend will continue for quite a while, so we may as well sit back and enjoy.

You have to remember that it wasn't too long ago that people were paying $1,000.00 for a G2 and I can remember the Coolpix 5700 coming on the market in Canada at a price of $1995.00 CAD two years ago, (the same price as the 20D body will sell for). The people that bought these cameras were for the most part, hobbyists, and now we are seeing them upgrading to D70's, 10D's and now I'm sure 20D's, people will spend more on a hobby these days, than most Pro's will spend on the gear they use. Digital Photography is just in it's infancy, I think we have just seen the tip of the iceberg so far.
