Hi All.

My mother has given me a picture of my stepfathers gran to tidy up and print before Monday.

The problem is that I have no experience/knowledge/idea of where to start.

The image can be found the following url Click Here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/g.tickner/pics/gran.jpg)

Before anyone suggests taking a new pic of her, she passed away on Tuesday :(

This is the original image and needs to be blown up to about 16x12 ish, any help is grateful.

Thanks in advance.

When you say original.. can you explain where the image comes from?

The image is very small (resolution) and the quality is not too great.

If this was a scan from film or print.. can it be re-scanned at higher res? (more pixels)

As far as help.. what are you looking for? Do you have a printer that can print that large?

Or are you looking to have the file upsized so that you can take ot to a print shop and go from there (this may be your best bet)

Anyway.. before we pull our hair out trying to make this image into a 16" poster... can you confirm tht there is no way to get a better file first? And let us know the origin of the file.

Thanks.

Sorry about that.

This is the last picture of her before she passed away, and the image is in its original format having come from my mothers point and click camera.

My Mother would like me to make a portrait out of it if possible.

So I need to cut out everything except Gran.

I hope this makes it a little clearer.

How do I start in making a portrait from this image?

What software do you have access to?

You'd want to crop it and tweek it and then try to resize it...

It's going to be a task...

Are you looking to do it.. or are you hoping to get soem help?

Check our "sticky" threads in "Post prcessing" for some Photoshop tips that will be of help.

It's a grainy, not so great shot which will be 100 DPI when printed at that size. If you could keep people from getting any closer than about 5 feet from the picture it might not look too bad.

When you get it printed and hold it in your hands it will look very bad because it's too close and you'll be able to see every grain and scratch and such. Click on your link and you'll have to agree that it doesn't look too good. But now back away from your monitor another 2 or 3 feet. It's not half bad, now, is it?

You could spend a decent amount of time on that image to improve it a little. Or just get it printed as-is and put it someplace where people can't get too close.

In my opinion it would be very difficult to improve. The problems with the image (grain, chromatic aberration, focus/blur issues) are inherent to the image and simply not easily fixed. At most you'd get a negiligible improvement for a lot of time. There's no real way to get more from that image.

Print the image as is, and place it at a distance where it looks decent for the size you print it, and make sure people can't get closer. That's the best advice I can give you.
