I got the lens knowing the incompatability, but thought it would still work on my 10D wide open at 2.8. I make sure that in manual mode the aperature is 2.8, and the same in AV, but still get the same Err 99. I've tried the battery replacement and on/off technique but no use. What else is there, besides having it re-chipped?

I think it needs re-chipping... I don't think there is anything else.

Sigma says they don't re-chip due to lack of parts, at least that's what they told me 2 weeks ago.

Interesting ... they told me yesterday that all I needed to do was send it (the lens) in and they would re-chip as a courtesy. My only fees would be shipping.

You'll need to be firm with Sigma.. remind them that this was a multi thousand dollar lens.. not some cheap $180.00 zoom... and make them understand that you are well aware that they can re-chip the lens.

OR.. if you are afraid that you may have to wait for a month.. you may try this. At least one member had excellent luck by bring the lens to an autorized Sigma service center. (look for camera repair shops)

The Shop still had to send it to Sigma.. but got the priority and thus the lens was back in a week.

If you ask about having a Sigma lens chip replaced, and if they can tell you "No, it can't be done," then you go away, Sigma has saved itself some repair cost and shipping cost.

On the other hand, if you show up at a Sigma service center with the lens in hand, they can probably take it, fix it, and have you pick it up a few days later, then they have saved themselves the shipping cost.

Thanks. It's just irritating that a Sigma tech told me two weeks ago that the lens would work wide open (only) on my 10D, and that it could not be re-chipped because there were no more chips and no more being produced. Was really wanting to use the lens this weekend...

...and finally, Sigma said that the chip for the 300/2.8 is no longer available, though others still are. Apparently it's not the same chip for all lenses. There might, however, be a way to make the lens work wide open without chip replacement, which is what I was told the lens would be able do originally anyway.

There definitely is a workaround-but you'll have to manually focus
Just don't turn the lens to the fully locked position on the camera. No electrical contact means no problems.Just don't let it fall off!

oops

After thinking about it for a few seconds i thought of a better way but had shut down the computer allready

Just cover the lens contacts with tape.

Thanks Ron, but I already sent the lens in.
