Hi everyone, I decided to buy a reversing ring from my local photography shop as I love what some of you guys can do with your Macro lenses. I need to wait some time before I have the money and skills to justify getting a nice Macro lens. This is what the guy from the photo shop ordered for me(see photo). He's told me I need to glue the two 'step up' rings back to back. I got confused with his instructions from here onwards. From what I have read, I thought you simply (well not really) attached ring to the body and then also to the incorrect end of your camera and then used manual focus to take your shots. However the guy seemed to be talking about using two lenses and backing them onto each other. I got lost at this point but purchased them anyway as I had already ordered them and felt an obligation to. Any ideas/ suggestions/ hints?

wtf has he sold you, you can get dedicated reversing rings for probably the same price.
there are two ways to do this whole thing.
1. using two lenses, one is attached as normal and the other is turned around and you attach this using a thread/thread adapter
2.using one lens turned around and attached to the camera body with a bajonet/thread adapter.

You can do what he has suggested and use a small lens reversed onto the front of a longer focal length lens but suspect what you were really after was a body reversing ring where you can reverse say the kit lens directly onto the camera body.

or you could just buy from Rolls Royce first time...

The idea I think that you are trying to follow is to join a reversed 50mm lens to the front of your existing lens but reversed. The idea that you have is right and will work, although there are dedicated adapters made to fit. Gluing two rings will work, but be sure to use some decent glue like a two pack epoxy or even silicon, and don't use too heavy a lens.

I know NZers have a reputation for ingenuity but there is no reason for gluing two rings together! I'd take them back to the shop , with some links (as posted above) to the commercially available options that do not require glue. Camera shop salesman should be a bit embarrassed for selling you these rings.
Are you able to purchase online? Could be worth considering....

Thanks Bill. I had a look at the 2nd link. I'm after a suitable ring to reverse my 18-55mm (58mm) lens onto my 400D. Do you think these are suitable? I kind of got the impression they were for backing two lenses together.

Still slightly unsure if you want a coupler to reverse the kit lens onto another lens or a reverse adapter to couple the kit lens directly onto the camera body.
This does the latter http://cgi.ebay.ca/Canon-EOS-Body-to-58mm-Reverse-Adapter_W0QQitemZ170174071560QQihZ007QQcategoryZ30 059QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem.
