I dont like how narrow the neck strap on the 1D is and i can tell it's been used a lot. Any of you ever bought a 3rd party strap they'd recomend?

TQ,

I recently bought a Tamrac strap and I like it. It has a soft flexible strap around my neck and it is very comfortable, especially over a long period of time and when it is hot out. I don't know the model number but I bought it from Calumet Photo and I recommend it

I have an Op-tech on the MkII.. makes it ten times easier to leave around the neck.

Lowepro makes a good knock-off of the Op-tech too... that's on my 10D

They are both neoprene.. a soft black flexible rubberlike material (like a wet suit) that just has no "teeth" to bite you with. Very comfortable.

The main thing i want to avoid is the "rash" i get from the cloth straps that i have. I guess anything rubbing against your neck for long enough is gonna have ill-effects, but i'd like to minimize them.

Oh just go and buy an OpTech. It's the best there is.

I can happily wander about with 10D, Big-Ed and 100-400L round my neck with one of those on the camera.

CDS,

That is the material I was trying to describe w/ the Tamrac strap I was talking about. I didn't explain it well but you hit it on the head.

Just giving options. I'll have to look up the Op-tech strap you explained to see the difference. I'm also looking for a wrist strap since I've seen threads about those and I've seen that they are recommended. Does anyone use both a neckstrap and a wriststrap at the same time? Seems like a lot of stuff hanging off of the camera at one time but it could be usefull.

I have the Op/Tech Pro Loop strap (http://www.optechusa.com/profess.htm#PRO%20STRAPS). It's very comfortable with my 10D and an 80-200/2.8L suspended.

One thing about Op-Tech straps is they have little rubber 'bumps' on the underside of the strap that reduce slipping. Around the neck, that's not important, but if carrying it over your shoulder, it's a big deal. There are several other straps available with similar construction and they all seem to use the same or similar material.

BTW, Op-Tech refers to their straps as "Weight Reduction Systems." I was a bit skeptical at first, but I'm a believer now.

My camera's neck strap doesn't spend much time around my neck. Most of the time it is wound around the tripod head (so as to prevent a long unexpected drop).

OP-TECH PRO!!! Get it in black with the rubber grips on the opposite side.

Best 20-30 dollars I've spent.

The 1D comes with the hand grip but i've already taken it off, Between plays, shots etc i have my camera hanging around my neck and i find it to be too much a pain to get the hand back in the shooting position with the grip on.

Thats just my first impression at least.

I was speaking of a strap and not a grip (not Big Ed). My mistake if I misled anyone. I also don't know what comes w/ a 1D so I was simply asking if anyone uses both a neckstrap and a wriststrap. I know controlz uses a wrist strap, as do others, so I was wondering if anyone uses both at the same time. What does anyone else use? Just looking for info.

Sorry for the confusion. Just looking how I can enhance the use of my camera.

I use both. My neck strap has quick release clips so that if I find that the neck strap is getting in the way I can quickly remove it. (Op/Tech has the "connection system")

I like the hand strap as it makes holding on the camera (1Ds) much less of a strain.

Thanks steven for the response. That is the feedback I was looking for. My neckstrap also has a quick release option on it so I may do the same as you.

Thanks.
