Noobie here. Can anyone tell me if this is a decent studio kit?

Also, it says it comes with modeling lights...are those the strobe lights? Will I still need to buy other bulbs for these? Or is this everything I need to get started.

I would not recommend that kit to you.

First, kits usually come with very cheap/poorly made stands.

Second, 160 watt seconds is probably the weakest you can get.

Modeling lights are lights that are constantly on and are used to light the room, as you usually want it somewhat dark, and show where the shadows from the strobes (and these are strobes) will be cast.

I don't know your budget, but you'd probably be better off buying online from AlienBee, perhaps one light at a time, maybe a 500ws light, and learn how to use it first, and then graduate to more lights as the need and your skillset rises.

It is everything you need to get started, except for a way to fire them and meter them.

You'll want a light meter, such as the Sekonic 358, and at least a flash on your camera to set them off, preferably a pocket wizard transceiver on your hot shoe and one on one strobe, the other will be set of optically.

Each of those lights is 160 wattseconds, equivalent to the Alienbees B400 (http://alienbees.com/b400.html) unit.

I would recommend comparing specs and prices carefully. The B400 has much faster recycle (3 seconds is a long time), much shorter flash duration, power adjustment down to 1/32, a cooling fan and a more powerful modeling light.

I don't think you'll be lacking for power with those lights, but eventually the limited power range and available modifiers will frustrate you.

I agree with the previous posters...plus, I'd like to add "don't get them" :)

I'll just add that the B&H kit will have virtually no resale value if you decide to sell for whatever reason. The Alien Bees hold their value. Used ones on eBay typically go for 90% - 95% and better of their initial cost.

Basically, you're saying BUY ALIEN BEE lights, right?
I think that's a good choice, I just thought it would be nice to get two lights for the price of one AB, but looks like the one AB will be better than both of the others.

Thanks guys!

If budget is a limiting factor, start with one light and a reflector and build your kit gradually as funds allow.

I think the quality is lacking in the kit you list also as pointed out the resell is going to be nill. I second the Alien Bees suggestion, you'll be very happy with the quality for the money of them

I went to B&H ( i live there) and they told me don't get AB400 or 800 because its not good or they never used it. They wanted me to get intemit or impact 300(s) or 1000w. They also try to sell the same kit to me as well... I was shocked to see this Thread!! My hat goes off to all of you who responded....

I am starting to take portraits and headshots and need some good lights, lighting steps, and suggestions. I thank you all again!!

I am ordering my AB right now... I am a newbie and I have been reading and breathing this site...
You all are wonderful for helping and giving suggestions.....

Happy Holidays to you all on this thread, in this forum, on this site!!!!

LOL!! I know Ben R... I was looking around and asking lighting questions. One of the reps told me, the Alien Bees are good and we have lighting equipment thats equivalent. I think that would be a better approach to help someone and land the sale. That's what you do to help people and get the sale. Not to bash other products or brands!

Oh well, i am glad I am reading this thread & didn't purchase a thing!

Jackie et al...

Alienbees makes great lights for the money. Their stands, modifiers and other accessories are not such great bargains. Light stands and umbrellas are pretty universal so feel free to shop around for that stuff.

I only have Ritz around here and that stuff LOOKS cheap. My wife said just pay the extra and get 1 AB800. Quality for the price.
