I was told a few weeks ago when I wanted to buy the 5D to wait for the new version to come out. Does anyone know when that will be?

no. Many speculate, none have the true answer. It's due for an upgrade though. The only thing that I am looking forward to is the anti-dust feature found in the other cameras. Dust is a monkey on my back. A dirty monkey. With a penchant for smacking me.

is it going to be the same price as the 5D is now?

There are plenty of rumors out there pertaining to the 5D replacement but nothing official to this point. The last rumor that I heard going around was that it would be announced around PMA early next year. As for its pricing, since the 5D is being heavily discounted at this point I can't see its replacement coming in at the same price. I'd guess it would come in around or over $3k. At this point the 5D is a great deal if it fits your needs and you aren't worried about the next big thing to be released.

If there will be a new 5D in early 2008 then it will be announced around Jan 26. But that might instead be when an updated XTi is announced. In that case the new 5D would probably be announced in October 2008.

If your need is not pressing wait ans see what comes in Jan. If a new 5D looks good you can wait for it or buy the old 5D at a lower price.

yeah, I've been hearing rumors that it'll be announced some where around Jan. 24-26

I know someone that works for one of the LARGE pro-camera stores and they said that they didn't think that Canon would release until the fall. That Canon would probably wait until all the smoke has cleared after releasing the 40D a while back and the 1DsMarkIII...Who knows. It'll be out when it comes out:(

Current 5D sensor with the 40D feature set at $2800 or less would really do it for me.

What if they stop making the 5D and they release a replacement for 3K+?? From what I have read most people seem to think the 5D will not drop much more than it already has. I know it sold for much more when it was new.
I personally see no competition for this camera. Such as something similar from Nikon so I see no reason why Canon would be in a big hurry to retire it.

My question is: So they show the new camera at the PMA thing in Jan. When might it be available at the store??

I think the 5D is one of the best values out there today. I can't imagine a new model priced anywhere near the current price. For me, it has all the features I'll need for quite some time. I was going to wait and I'm very glad I didn't. I can't imagine one feature they would add that would make me regret purchasing it when I did.

Got mine last month. Don't care when or if the new one comes out. The 5D is a great camera body as is and I don't think it's going to be cheaper once the replacement is released.

must wash that vision out of my mind right now.. :p

5d it awesome get a good discount one now. add a couple of lens 50mm 1.4 ;) and something else. and when the 5d replacement (6d ? ) is released - just smile as you got a good deal ..

as for pricing the *6D will be around the rrp of the 5D

*not it's real name - just speculation.

whats lacking in the 5D is auto dust-removal, higher FPS and the usual incremental improvement in low-noise high-ISO performance (Digic III). dust/weather sealing - that remains in the 1D series' domain. i agree that the 5D still lacks serious competition - the new D300 is not fullframe, the D3 is but has lower resolution than the 5D and costs more. Canon also needs to ensure that its replacement doesn't make it less attractive for buyers to go the 1D series route. just curious, what feature would make you guys want to upgrade from the 5D to the 5D II? its a non-starter for me, im seriously lacking playtime with my 5D now to even justify going for any upgrade or addtional equipment!

I had the same problem and ended up buying the 5d now...price has really bottomed out I think , and I believe the upgrade, when it does come will be SUSTANTIALLY higher in price.

If there will be a new 5D in early 2008 then it will be announced around Jan 26.

Jan 24 was the last estimate (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=157341)

certainly will

Also even if it is announced on Jan 24 it won;'t be in the shops for a couple or three months

I hear the 5DmkIII in 2009 will blow away anything out there. For me that is were my money is, I'm waiting.

if i had my choices, i'd like to have an advanced AF system in the next model, as well as usable ISO 6400. from the list above, the higher FPS and incremental high ISO performance would help sway, but not seal the deal (depending on the cost of the new model, of course).

i don't need a 2nd body right this moment, so i am willing to wait to hear the specs and price of the new model.

I never buy cameras when they first come out. I wait. I waited for about a year to get the 5D for Christmas last year. It was worth it. I just got the 40D, after the dust settled. The 5D is still the best camera for the value I've ever used and I cannot imagine not getting it ASAP. Even if the new one is so much better, I can't imagine getting it right as it comes out. I don't need it. My 5D is like an extension of my eye. :)

as rightfully said, i think the decision to upgrade depends alot on YOUR shooting needs. for me, 16MP sensor & higher FPS wouldn't catch my attention - i don't print beyond A3 and neither do i shoot sports often. what would be welcomed are weather sealing (fat hope i know..) and minimal-noise ISO 6400. even these two doesnt seem to really warrant an upgrade from the 5D. if all that matters is IQ, i think alot of us 5D owners wouldn't be so keen to upgrade. it's the bells & whistles which entice us - faster FPS, LiveView, more AF points, speedier processing (Digic III) etc. (what would really catch my attention would be a 20-135mm F/2.8L IS. fat hope again...). so the decision to buy now or wait for the 5D II really depends if the current 5D's features would meet your needs, or whether the above upgraded features is worth the wait.

If I was you I would only buy now only if I NEEDED an SLR NOW. I am looking to upgrade and can wait until the 24th of January. If you cant, go for it. If you really dont care about any potential additional features...go for it. The 5D is a great camera, you will love it.

You could also wait and see if a 5Dmkii will be announced 1/24, what it will have, and how much it will be. If its still not released then...or is too much for you...or is not what you want, then you could always buy a 5D then.

Well you've already got a body to use for now, so I would wait if I were you. I need a second body for back-up, etc, but since I don't absolutely NEED it now, I'm going to wait.

My answer would be totally different if you didn't have something to use right now.

the crappy fall rebates killed my original plans...i was going to swoop in on a new 5D at double (or gasp - even triple!) rebates, use it for a few months, then dump it for the newer model at near the price i bought it for.

I just had all my gear stolen -- yeah, all of it. So I'm thinking of buying a 10d body (which is what I had) cheap, getting all my lenses (again) and waiting on the 5d's upgrade. Sound sensible?

Buy it now...its a great deal on a great camera. Mine arrives Christmas Eve!

Get the kit with the 24-105L. Save over $300 on the glass!

I'm sure the new camera will be great, but how great? and at what cost? Yet to be seen. Start taking shots now or wait until ???

Yes, was insured, Suz, but no word yet on how much I'll get. I'd been saving up for a new body, but wasn't quite ready to have to replace the big glass, too!

Just went to school to volunteer for my son's 5th grade holiday party. I took 90 portraits and the kids made nice foam frames to take the pictures home to their parents. I shot with the 5D 24-70, no flash, just indirect sunlight in the hallway. Shots were great. I happened to see another mom shooting the stuff in the hallway. She had a brand new 5D and 50 1.2 lens. I went right up to her, introduced myself and asked if she would shoot with me for the yearbook. She was glad to. I have a new Canon friend! She bought her 5D with the printer rebate. It's so worth the money, even if a new model comes out. Her set-up was beautiful.

I'll wait till the end of Jan to hear any news. If no news then I'll buy the 5D kit (w/ the 24-105)

it's already in my B&H shopping cart! hehe
