I took these in our poor, multi colored lit arena. With a Custom White Balance, it's still almost impossible to get a nicely lit shot.
Thoughts or opinions?
Let me have it !!!

Looking pretty good. What settings/lens were you shooting?
#2 is a bit difficult for me, I keep getting drawn to the players backside and never find the puck.
#4 I like the CANON in the background +1

I was shooting a Custom White Balance, ISO 1600, 1/500's @ f2.8. I used my Sigma APO DG 70-200 f2.8.
#2- You're right !! quickly glancing at it, the eyes are draw to the players back. I'm gonna have to keep that in mind, for next time.;-)
I've got two more, these turned out pretty nice to me capturing nice expressions in the faces, however no puck in the picture.
I'd like to draw your attention to the top of the second picture. Take note of the netting above the glass. This netting is in almost all Canadian rinks. This Netting was made manditory after a young spectator was killed by a puck, that went over the glass at a game. This Netting goes all around the rink, from the top of the glass to the roof. I've tried shooting over the glass through this netting, but it can really mess up AF. You can Zoom through it, but when you slightly move horizontally the AF starts hunting. I usually have to us MF when I shoot over the glass.
Thanks for your comments, Jeremy:-)

Looking good. Great goalie shot in number 1. The trifecta - face, puck, net !
On the netting - I've been in what seems like all of them in this part of the province. I'd say 10-20% went with netting all the way around. Many others went with taller glass. Not only is the net a pain to photograph through, It just makes watching the game less enjoyable. I'm all for it at the ends, but on the sides it's non value added.

Yeah, the netting is a true pain to try and watch, or shoot a game through. But hey, it saves lives. I guess the smaller rinks (like mine) opted for the cheaper way out, buy using the netting.
BTW, these shots were taken in the rink Chris Pronger played in, while in High School.

shots show good timing & composition. they have the thru-the-glass look; I guess netting has the same effect -- everything looks a little washed out and less crisp. See if you can get into the penalty box or behind the players on the bench.
I've worked the netting before -- one way is to temporarily remove the wires that hold it down in 1 spot, lift the netting to shoot, and then replace the anchor wire. But I didn't like standing on a stepladder; I felt I had no way to duck if a puck came at me (without falling off the step).... so I went back to the box.

I think these shots look great. I bet your really enjoying having that Sigma 70-200 to shoot hockey with. I really like the 4th shot.

Thanks DavidEB for the C&C,
Actually, the only shot that was taken through the Glass was the first one. That same picture was heavily cropped also. I just liked the way it looked.
The others were taken from the Penalty Box.
I have alot of problems getting a half decent CWB out of this rink. That rink has two different, light cast colors to it. Some of the lights cast Blue, and the others cast a Brown. Also, the lights are set higher in the arena, so that cuts my shutter speed at f2.8. I hate shooting in this rink, but this rink is the larger surface. This surface is unfortunately always used, for our at home, High School Hockey Games. Our other rink has much brighter and consistant lighting, but the penalty boxes are incased in glass. So it's either through the Glass, or the Netting on that rink.
I think I'm losing alot of image quality, when I resize for this site. I might have to look into opening up an image gallery online, and link my photos there. However it might be just my Photoshop Skills too, I'm a Noob....
Thanks for the Tips on the Netting, I might have to try that.
Funny thing is, when I walk into the rink sporting the Big Lens. They seem to let me do, whatever I want.;-)

Hell Ya, I'm loving the Sigma. Only thing is, I'm looking for a more responsive body now. A 30D or 40D, are in my sights now. ;-)
