The grip holds two batteries and gives you a second shutter release and dial for shooting vertical. It also gives you a usually much better balanced rig...

EDIT: I use the canon grips, but some people have luck with Opteka, etc as well

Get the Canon grip... Some people have had good luck with the third party grips, some not. The Canon is a better made product and if anything goes wrong you'll get better warranty service. The proper Canon grip for the XTi is the BG-E3.

The BG-E3 grip for the XTi is probably the best thing you can buy for it. After I got mine, it felt like a whole new camera. Couldn't think of shooting without one now.

It's a great upgrade.

Unless you have very small hands you will never want to be without one.

I own the aftermarket grip for my XTi and although I am very happy with it, reading the boards you will see some that have had a few issues. I would buy the Canon one if I did it again just to be safe.

Well, if you have absolutely nothing else to spend $140.00 on. But the money might be better put towards a lens, or flash, or something maybe more useful. Grips can be a nice accessory, but they're not quite a necessity.
