not sure if this is the right section but i figured id start here.

so now we have DSLR's with live view on them ...

my question is

do you think there will ever be a time when they will have a DSLR, with live view that would also have an "exposure view" ?

the sensor is already collecting the light & creating the image, so you could essentially set it up to project that image onto the LCD screen while it is capturing it.

you would probably need to beef up the processor so theres no lag between the real time capture & whats being projected on the LCD and maybe a few other tweaks to let it work effeciently though.

i know there isnt really a need for this but it was an idea that just popped into my head. could be something used on some P&S cameras to be targeted towards the younger crowd or something even

***edit*** no "thats a dumb idea" , "thats not needed why bother" , "theres no benefit" comments either please. i realize that it has no value and its more of a fun factor idea hence the statement of targeting the younger crowd

I don't see it appealing above and beyond simple Live View and as such I couldn't see a manufacturer spending R&D money implementing it...

Edit: Perhaps because mostly it'd only be noticeable in long-ish shutter speeds - ones where you're pushing what is hand-holdable (well, IS changes that a bit nowadays but there's still limitations) and the vast majority of P&S cameras are used hand-held most of the time (at least, from what I've seen).

It seems to me that it'd be mighty complicated doing interpolation on the fly like that, but it could definitely be useful, particularly if you could get a remote monitor to use for light painting. Sure as hell would take some of the fun out of it, though ;)

One fundamental issue is the noise statistics. I haven't done the math for current-generation CCD photo-sensors, but I'm pretty sure there's a noise penalty for the read-out operation. In other words, collecting 10 one-second exposures and summing them is not the same a collecting 1 ten-second exposure.

Are they any digital astronomers out there with more recent data/experience?

Cheers,

Neil, I've thought about this too and wondered if it would be something that they could implement. It occurred to me once when I was making a really long exposure at night. I thought it would be good (fun, if nothing else!) to be able to watch the exposure develop in real time.

It would make long exposures with blub mode lots of fun :)

and thats what i was thinking, the deal with the bulb mode & light painting (i actually had the bulb mode in there but edited it out)

i know it would be more of a novelty thing 99.9% of the time but it would give you something to do during a long exposure haha.

If I understand your post, there is already an implementation of this in the 40D. In liveview you can view the lcd like any old P&S where you basically get a video feed of your shot or you can choose the exposure mode so depending on your exposure and whether you are under/over exposing you'll get a dark or washed out feed on the lcd.

i mean having the image displayed as the sensor is collecting the image.
if youve done dark room development it would be like watching the image appear on the paper, only youd be watching it appear on the screen

say you take a 30 second exposure and are using a light to paint the picture, you could have it so you see the image thats being taken and can add light where you want to or add more if needed becuase youd see the image as its being taken

Ok, I see.
