The first is a better rendering of the car, but I'm liking the feel of the 2nd harder shot, too. What do you think?

The contrast masking processing is explained in a 'sort of tutorial' here:

(There are several others that I'm going to try out this week.)

300D, RAW, Manual everything.
Kit lens, 22mm, 1/8, f-16, ISO 100

Excellent shots, and I also preferred the second version. It is a very very well done treatment and I only had a couple of minor nitpicky comments.

First off, although this is an *excellent* paste job, there is still just a little bit of haloing around the car, especially around the lateral margins of the front bumpers, as well as the tires.

Second, it seems as though there should be more shadow under the car and under the tires specifically.

And finally I would get rid of the reflection of whatever streetlight that is on the driver side bumper, as well as the hood.

All of which are minor details, but if you're shooting for perfection, the Devil is in the details.

Rad

PS - How bout a link to whatever tutorial taught you how to create that background. More than just a gradiant, right? Also, did you sample the car color to get your background color?

I like #2. It's closer and brighter.

Geez, Rad, you're tough today! The images aren't finished yet, & probably won't be 'till this winter as far as the "I would get rid of the reflection of whatever streetlight that is on the driver side bumper, as well as the hood." I'm 'saving' that for when the weather is 'normal Michigan'.

As for "tutorial taught you how to create that background. More than just a gradiant, right?". Well, no. It's just a 'reflected Gradient' you'll find at the top of the toolbar (4th from the left) when you hit the "G" key in PS7 & CS.
Re: "Also, did you sample the car color to get your background color?" Yes.

I can tell you about "a little bit of haloing around the car", that's an easy fix. Recall the selection, Select>Modify/Contract (2 px), then Select>Inverse & erase the halo on the sides & top. You have to be careful 'cause some of the halo is actually a reflection of the parking lot on the sides & bottom of the fenders. So don't inverse the selection & use the clone tool @ about 30% to knock it down a bit.
The bottom of the fenders halo actually looks more prominent here than on the full size Tiff! Maybe it's caused in the jpeg conversion?

Re: "it seems as though there should be more shadow under the car and under the tires specifically." This could be another easy fix. The 'shadow' is on a separate layer & I could just change the opacity. But the pic was taken late in the day & the shadows are very open then, so for now I think I'll leave it alone. It also looks fairly dark on my monitor... maybe one of us is out of sync. I haven't adjusted mine this month.

Here's the cleaned up pic:

Anyone else?

Geez, Rad, you're tough today!

Ya think that that is tough? ? ? ? Wait till ya hear what I noticed NOW. In fact, now that I noticed it, I don't know how I missed it and it bugs me more and more!

I don't think that the antenna should breach the frame of the shot. It feels somehow intrusive. Almost as if the backgound page might spill into the shot through that small crack. I wonder if this thought was spurred by the documentary on the Baldwin Hills Dam Failure that I saw last night? In any event, if you have the end of the antenna somewhere, clone it in so that it is visible and no longer touches the edge.

Haha! First thing I noticed when I opened it up! The top IS included in the pic & I'll fix it when I decide how long it should be... this winter.

I wonder if this thought was spurred by the documentary on the Baldwin Hills Dam.

Best to not watch the old WWII movie "Dam Busters"!

Haha! Thanks, Andy. I'll probably post the finished ones of this car in "Share".
So, which version did you like best?

Frank,
Love the background effect and the car - I've not read all the comments but my only gripe would be that the image seems to be slightly off level (horizontal) and needs rotating ccw.

Other than that I like what I see apart from the missing grass and dandylions!

Cheers
David

  Another guy who couldn't answer the simple question, "So, which version did you like best?"

So I'm done with this thread & will post the rest of the pics of this car in "Share".

Thanks for the input Rick, & Rad. :)
