View Full Version : When do you use your P&S?

I've realised I have stopped using my IXUS 300. Haven't touched it since I got the 300D. My mom wondered if I would sell the IXUS when I got the 300D and I said no, but now I'm starting to contemplate it. At the same time I keep thinking "it's good to have for those times when I can't bring the 300D". Question is, when would that be? :?

So, when do you guys leave the DSLR at home and just bring along the compact?

Never. :)

I bring them both along many times but NEVER use the P&S.

That said, I still hunger for a small Leica-like camera to unobtrusively catpure events and scenes of the day. Thus I'm always contemplating an upgrade from my original 3MP P&S digicam.

On the beach, at parties, anywhere that has a "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" sign :D

I don't have a P&S. If I had a P&S, I would use it when:
- asking other people to take pictures of me since many people don't know how to operate an DSLR :P
- a compact P&S could be brought any time;
- the P&S have advantages to DSLR some times. For example, I could hold it up high for taking photos when I were in the crowd.
- the P&S would be cheaper for water photography.

Just my "thoughts"...

On hikes. I don't want to lug around a big, bulky DSLR with a handful of lenses out on the trails.

My G3 is in the car all the time. I don't take my DSLR to work every day, but I have had occasion to need/want a camera there. Go to the car, and I am ready. Keeping something as big as a DSLR and kit in the car is not practical (or wise).

Have Fun,

I keep the G3 in the car, too. It's ideal for construction site visits and building inspections. I rarely use it for anything else but it's always there if I get caught without a dslr (like the time a truck hit my car while parked in front of my office).

I keep my S330 in the car all the time as well, but the only time I had a need for it (when I totalled my car), the camera was at home. I had taken it out of the car to charge the batteries and forgot to put it back in the glove compartment. D'oh! :)

Lucky you, otherwise, it would be broken now

Best regards,

I take the A80 with me day-to-day. I also pull it out if I've been working with either wide or telephoto a lot on the D60 and a "normal" ange shot comes along that I don't want to change lenses for. That'll last until I get around to picking up the 20D.

I took it to Disney with my 3 year old. No way I could carry my D60/lens/flash and still enjoy the time. I have a little P&S that fits nicely in a pocket and takes pretty good shots for what it is. Not going to make 20x30's of these anyway. Also take to parties (you never know) and keep lying around the house for those great moments you want to capture, but you just can't go get the gear.

Haven't shot once with my S1 IS since I got the rebel. I should've sold it. :?

I use my S400 when I need a camera that fits in my pocket, and also when the versatility of an SLR is not required.
The trouble with DSLRs is you tend to cart most of your lenses and other kit just in case .. and that can get cumbersome.
So a small compact 3.3Mp digital camera like your 300 is a useful tool .. I'd keep it just in case.

When your 1 month old (?) 300D gets an Err 99, and Canon says it will take  4 weeks to repair  .

...no comments...

Keep the P&S. I know I'm appreaciating having kept my A70

I use my G5 to take pictures of my other two cameras.

Otherwise its main use is to keep papaers from flying off my desk when the fan is on.

I'm another car keeper for my G3.
Used it to photograph an accident that stopped me the other day. Picture was just of bike and car - no people - but lady in a nearby car shouted that my behaviour was 'ghoulish' (sic).

Was it?

Generally, my G3 gets very little use I must admit but does get a fright when I go away sailing and I,m scared to take DSLR.

Maybe in Scotland, but nowhere else that I know of.

The bike is really in a sad state. Any fatalities?
