View Full Version : A rose (or a business) by any other name..

Okay, so yes, I'd like to have photography be my form of income. I know it's hard to start a small business and I am studying and practicing as much as possible. :) My real question is regarding a business name. I want to concentrate on people such as families, babies, maternity, engagement, whatever. In the future I hope to do weddings but I want to make sure I am well schooled.. :) But, I want to keep that in mind for a name as well.

My goal is to have a feel that is smart, unique but still evokes that emotion that people look for in portraits.

I want a company name that reflects this. I know a lot of people use their names, but mine is achingly common (particularly my last name) and I don't really care to use it for a business name.

At first I thought of "Something Witty" but I figured that evokes really no emotion and sounds kind of sarcastic, so I don't think that would be all that appealing.

But, the other day I thought of something with.. "tenacious" or "tenacity". The definition per M-W says..

"2 a: persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired"

So, if I said that I was tenacious in wanting to create the "perfect" image that would be valued and desired by the customer that would work.. Plus, I've been described as tenacious before, so it represents who I am as well.

In the end, am I thinking way too much into this? Would a photography business with the word "tenacity" be a turn off to people?

I appreciate your feedback!

I think "tenacious" is a bit too aggressive for the things that you are wanting to shoot. You could maybe use tenacious or tenacity as part of a slogan, but I don't think I would use it in the business name.

There is also this band...Tenacious D! ;)

IMHO tenacious seems a bit sterile. I just went with my own name for my business name since a lot of wedding business comes from word of mouth and I felt that my name would probably be what people passed along anyway. What about Aurora Skyes photography? I think that if someone is going to pick a photographer based on name alone they would look for something warm and friendly.

To me the word "tenacious" has somewhat of a negative connotation, very close to "stubborn", "dogged" or "relentless". Certainly not a warm and fuzzy concept likely to attract brides or mothers of small children!

Thanks for the feedback all. You're probably right about the tenacious thing. I have thought about something with 'skye' in it before as well. My husband likes something with "belle" like "belle vie" but I don't really like it particularly the fact it's too close to Bella Photography or what not, the big wedding photo people. It doesn't seem original enough.

It doesn't seem original enough. Make it something that people can remember & spell correctly. ;)
