View Full Version : Another thought on infamous Err 99

Hi all,
To those that have been around awhile, they know I have not been around a lot. In fact, I missed the release of the 20D! Oh well...

Ok, so I was on the USS Intrepid and was taking pics of Concorde. I had the 10D which has 10,850 actuations now, a Lexar 1GB CF Card, the Canon 16-35mm F2.8L and Big Ed w/ 2 batteries. I was shooting and then all of the sudden I get an Err 99. I think that it is odd so I turn it off then back on. When it fired up, it showed 00 in the aperature with the lens on. Ok, so I fiddled with it and sure enough it came back on. I found that there is some corrosion on the contacts where the camera and lens meet. So this is just another one for everyone that has gotten it, something else to look at/try/fiddle with. This just goes to show it happens w/ Canon lenses too.

Cheers,
Canuck

Are you in your new billet now? Either way, it's good to see you 'lurking.' Don't worry about missingi the 20D rollout; it's just a 10D on steroids.

Ohh, it hurts... Sure, you big boys with your MKII's can throw camera bodies around like so much chattle  Gone are the posts of the 10D being a "wonderful" camera. Forgotten are the rights of initiation for those MKII owners who cut their teeth on the 10D. Oh the embarrasment of it all . I am assuredly resigned to pseudoism even before I have my 20D :~( . "Just a 10D on steroids... and from a venerable MOD no less.

Don't make me cancel my order and get a MKII just to spite my lack of photography skill!

*On topic: having well over 30,000 actuations I started getting the Err 99 and also the 00 as Canuck mentions. Cleaning the contacts and re-seating the lens fixed the problem; but it is disconcerting.

Don't get me wrong. Steroids are good.

FWIW, I still take terrible photos, I just do it a lot more spectacularly now.

Not quite...the USS Intrepid is in NYC so that is where I am now...it will be a little while before I get to the final destination...hence the on the Woo-hoo Express.

Oh, yes I was in B&H earlier today, I made that pilgrimage to the shrine of camera kit and holy cow is it incredible. I was holding a used 1D and this I think might be the way for my upgrade...for now. I find myself limited by the 10D in many circumstances. The 1D rocks, and can't even begin to imagine the 1D Mark II. I picked up a 1.4x TC for the Sigma and a nifty fifty f1.8 there. I was thinking of the f1.4 but decided against it. I managed to forget a few items I wanted, but I can just as easily mail order them. I also noticed the much more ka-thud I am used to in the 35mm world that the 10D makes only a ch-ch.

Regarding the 20D I see that it is improved, but not worth dumping a 10D for it unless you have money to blow.

I don't know how much lurking I will be up to for the next few weeks.

LMAO !!! Tom, get off the juice ! :P

I had error 99 once on my rebel. My camera has less than 10,000 shots taken, and the lens was almost brand new, so I don't know exactly why that happened, but shutting down and removing the battery solved the problem.
