EquiSport Photos is looking for a few good shooters to help cover major US horse racing tracks. If you live near a major track, and love to get up before the sun comes up, this could be right up your alley. We need front people to get the early week work-outs and then assist us on the weekends. Fast glass is a plus, but we bring a few extra goodies with us too. And, it even pays (not enough to get that 500 f/4 you have on your Christmas list though, sorry), Here's a glimpse of what we need. http://www.equisportphotos.com/gallery/3997624
Our emphasis is on the Triple Crown Trail in the Southeastern US (Gulfstream, Fair Grounds, Oaklawn, Churchill Downs, etc) but we are trying to establish a national network (New York, California, etc). Click on the "Contact Us" link on our website for more info.

Thanks,

I'm in Cincinnati Oh, and we have Riverdowns and Turfway Park here. I don't know if either are tracks you would be interested in have some one at. The closest I have ever come to shooting a horse race is the jousting at the renaissance festival, but I have shot some IRL and ALMS racing. I know it’s not the same as horse racing but the concepts seem similar to me. I have a 30D, 24-70 f/2.8L and a 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L at the moment and am looking to get a 70-200 f/2.8 IS L soon. I don't know if my equipment or background is what you are looking for but, I am always up for new challenges and learning new things. My website is down at the moment because my hosting company upgraded the server and scrambled EE, but I can email you shots if you would like to see them

For all those that have responded.

Thanks for your interest in helping us with race photography, This is our procedure. We are looking for early week stuff, specifically morning works of particular horses, on Monday or Tuesday before the race. We will let you know which horse we want to feature. You then have to find the barn, follow the horse to the track, get some shots and upload to our website. All by noon.
Then we are looking for assistance or complete coverage on the day of the Stakes races.
Hopefully you have seen our website by now to see the types of shots we are looking for. In addition, we need post parade of all horses and Winner’s Circle shots.
We will credential you for race day and give you an assigned position. Our pay rate is based on the Grade of the Stakes as follows $100 for G1, $75 for G2, $50 for G3, $25 for other. Additionally, $50 per horse for Morning Works, and $100 if published. Keep in mind that there are usually multiple races needed and we will usually pay $100 minimum per assignment.
Photo copyrights remain with photographer, but photographer agrees not to publish or distribute in any manner for one year. EquiSport Photos receives unlimited use of photos in return for the shooting fee.

If you ever need anyone in Australia. let me know. Email to me is enabled for other members. Currently I am northern NSW and can cover Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast for things like Magic Millions sales/races etc. but I would be prepared to travel.
It's a bit harder getting morning training shots here as we do not have the American barn system and many trainers work out at home, but some are possible.
My background is many years competing in hacking, dressage etc and judging conformation, riding, equipment and dressage, as well as breed classes such as Arabians and ponies. I bred Arabians for some years and I and my stock have competed to levels as far as Sydney's annual Royal Easter Show, which has quite stiff qualifying conditions.
As a child Mum had a racehorse trainers licence and for a time was a deputy trainer to a harness racing trainer, so my equine experience is very wide. Covers lots of early mornings doing exercise for gallopers and trotters and pacers, and it's hung on, I'm rarely still in bed at 5am!
The website it great, good shots.

How does it work exactly? Do you need a pass to be able to go back in the stable area? Would the trainers be upset over someone following their horse with a camera? I'm somewhat interested in doing Fairgrounds, but I may not yet be the caliber of photographer you are seeking.

I live very close to Charles Town Races, home of the Preakness. If you have any of the larger events that need to be covered there, I could do that.

JBF,
I live in the Phoenix area and we have a smaller not so well known as the other tracks but it might be one you would be interested in adding to your network. The track is Turf Paradise, located in north Phoenix. If you are interested in this track I would be very interested. Please let me know when you have the opportunity.
Thanks,
Larry

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. We have been swamped with the Derby and we wern't allowed to use our own shooters like we thought. There isn't much until after the triple crown. Mostly Fall stuff, like Aqueduct, Monmouth, Saratoga, etc. More will be revealed.
