My daughter called me today, while answering the phone I looked
out our kitchen window and saw what I thought was a small dog
messing with something on the road, then I realized that it wasn't
a dog, but one heck of a BIG hawk! Ran and grabbed my Canon G7
with it's 6x zoom but still couldn't get it as close as I'd liked to have had.

Here's the original shot and then a crop of the hawk from that image;

this sucker was big, he flew away with what looked like the insides of a rabbit
or something off into the woods so I didn't get another chance to shoot it.

I wish I could have gotten a better shot than through the window and at such
a distance, really neat bird, scary big bird though! :)

A very large Red Tail Hawk. They get big alright. You did a nice job of getting the goods on him though. :)

That guys is a beast, at least you captured it...

Thanks, it was impressive to see, sparks a desire to track him down and capture
some more, I'm guessing he must live close by?

I may want to get a 300mm one of these days for shots like that! would have been
nicer. I would have love to have gotten closer but I knew if I waited a second longer
he'd have flown and indeed he did, if I even messed with the door to go outside!

Hawks cover such a large area it's doubtful you will see him again. It could happen, but not likely. :)

Unless you find the powerline it likes to perch on ;) Nicely captured, Red-tails are an impressive hawk.

Pure luck, if my daughter hadn't phoned when she did, I'd never would have
noticed him out there and as I say, at first I thought it was a small dog of some
sort, but it wasn't :)

I'll be on the look out for him from now on!

I found that if I don't look for them they show up....but if I'm prepared they never show. Go figure. :p

And I agree about how big they are..my first encounter photographing one I was in it's flight path and it flew about 6-8 feet above my head going from one tree to the next. I got some blurry pics of a wing and it's tail.

Nice shots of this beautiful raptor....:D

Thanks guys, I'm thinking of getting a 300 f4 for occasions like this, not sure I could
hold a longer lens steady...
