Instead of a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, I've been considering Canon primes and TC. I want to avoid future lens & body compatibility issues and I can't afford the Canon 70-200 f2.8 and the f4 isn't fast enough.

According to the EOS website the TC's only work with primes of 135mm and longer, but has anyone actually tried a TC with the 100mm f2 or any other non-recommended lenses (like a 50mm f1.8 )?

EDIT
Has anyone tried shorter primes and other lenses with other TC's - Sigma & Tamron?

The problem is that the front element of the Canon TCs extends into the rear of the lens, and they won't even mount on the shorter primes. I just verified that with the 1.4x II and the 100mm f2. The other short primes have the same situation, as their rear element is almost flush with the rear of the body of the lens.

I don't know about the non-Canon TCs.

Have Fun,

The Canon EF TC's have protruding front element which makes the mounting of the "regular" lenses impossible. You can only mount L lenses on Canon EF TC's.

I have the Tamron 1.4X and 2X SP TCs, they work well with the Canon 50mm f/1.8, 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, 28-80mm f/2.8-4 L, and 200mm f/2.8 L, both in AF and IS.

So the sigma TCONS would work with my small primes...

Thats an interesting though...2x on my 50mm 1.8 could be a useful lens.

Thanks for the info. Anyone else tried it with other lenses?

Having googled around I think the Sigma and Canon TC's are similar in that they each have an element that protudes and thus stops it working with certain lenses. The Tamron doesn't have a protuding front element which lets it work with more lenses.

My I suggest to all reading the Sticky at the top of this forum.. it lists compatible lenses for both the Canon and Sigma T-cons among other usefull info that would indeed concur with Tomsk's conclusion that a Sigma T-con will NOT work with a 50mm f/1.8 :)
