Just a quick question but how do you all manage to mentally keep track of your images relative to the action of the game. Said another way, I often look at an image in post that I really like but for the life of me can't remember much about the action at the time I shot it. In that case, how do I come up appropriate captions? I could be generic, you know..
Bay Rocket's Jane Doe (30) drives past Westlake Demons' Jenny Doe (43) in a tightly fought battle between the two undefeated rivals. Bay eventually won the contest 64-62 and now sits in first place in the Southwest Conference ahead of Westlake.
Thing is, this really doesn't say much about what happened right at that moment, and a caption like this can only be used once or maybe twice in a group of shots of the same game. So, how do you guys keep track so you can come up with captioning magic later on?

I don't do it unless the stuff is going to the paper - if it's going to stock then it's getting a generic description. However, for the paper the Mark IIn has a recorder so after a big play just record what happened, score, quarter, etc. Buddy who shoots Nikon full-time for the paper (he's trying to get them to switch to Canon but they won't listen) has to write everything down in a little pad - and he swears at me when he sees me recording and he's writing :)

I do the same thing Mr. Janes does, use the recorder on my 1IIN to record all of the important info with the file.

I concur with Mike and Chris, but I also look up the play-by-play on ESPN for NCAA and pro events, just to jog my old memory.
BTW, here's a good guide for caption writing:

Chris and Dennis, thanks. My issue is that with only a few days left before Christmas (and having once again gone overboard on the kids), I have a better chance getting a notepad than an MarkII.:lol: I also shoot HS mainly so unless it's my alma mater (Lakewood St. Ed's) it's not likely seeing ESPN anytime soon.
Thanks for the SS link though, that is quite helpful.

...and you mustn't get self conscious or paranoid about it! At the club ground where I shoot cricket, I often sit close to the spectators. When a batsman gets out or a bowler reaches some milestone wicket, I start talking to my camera and can almost hear those who know nothing about my camera passing comment to each other - "weirdo!"

It might be just me, but with few so many photos daily, I lost wish to be writer or poet. So I just add names to pretty much generic captions (Photo Mechanic does great job with code replacement, to make everything even easier). And of course I do this on the end of day, because if I leave it for few days, they are never done anymore.
PS: Photo should tell story anyway, and captions should be just plain facts not editorial text ;)
