Right...Borders

Lets talk about borders!

I never used to a put a border on my pictures, just thought it added no benefit to the shot

(by border i just mean a simple black line around the edge of the photo)

I then started to add borders around the shots, and thought that it gave the shots a proffesional fell to them :rolleyes:
After doing that for about 6/8 months i have again become uncertain.

So do borders add something, or they just a waste of space!

I know the feeling :)
I used to be so against borders (back in my film/scan days) as it seem to mean the photo was manipulated.

Then when digital SLR's came out, it started becoming much more common. I really try not to manipulate my photos and try to get it right out of the camera, but with many liking the frames I took another look. So I asked a bunch of people (a while ago) to look at two photos, both were the same but one had a frame. They all liked the framed one better.

So now I have been framing my online photos with a white background with a shadow

But seeing how things go, you can probably ask me the same question next year and I might give a different answer. At least there are options :)

The right kind of border can help accentuate or add more style to a picture IMHO.

The trouble is picking the right border for a particular picture. The safe ones are of course the white, black, and black/white w/ opposite keyline.

Some of the sloppy border styles are pretty cool too (when paired with the right shot).

I will usually play around with borders (If the image is already in Corel PSPP XI anyway) and sometimes I will hate it, and for some shots 'it just works'

The way I made the border in my photo was create a new file 50px wider and 50px longer then the photo (650x450px in this case, where photo was 600x400px. It can also be done by expanding the canvas.) with white background color. Then copied the photo and pasted it into the new file into the center and used the drop shadow tool (which I believe is in Photoshop 7 and later) in the software which gives it a 3D effect.
