I was aiming up at this dove when another shooter walked by and looked up to see what I saw. When she saw it was just a dove, she smiled. I said "Hey, if it flies, I'll shoot it." And she laughed.

Dove On A Stick.

I was putting along, scanning the trees, and saw a shape that didn't belong. I truly find this "trick" very worthwhile when shooting birds. I keep my vision relaxed and try to keep my eyes peeled for a line or a shape that doesn't fit the surounding area. It's amazing what jumps out. I saw a bird shape from 50 or 60 feet, slowed the car down, and looked up. Yep, a bird.

A Cedar Waxwing - a beautiful bird and something I've been wanting for a long time. My 3 attempts at Waxwings were not postable. Blurred, too many branches, underexposed, too far away, whatever - generally a combination of those mistakes.

I'm not ecstatic about these shots - too many branches and a terrible angle - but it's a Cedar Waxwing. These go into the Keepers pile until I get better ones.

Scottes -

Nice shots.

Do you mind sharing what equipment you are using in these shots?

Also, I apologize if this is considered bad form to post a picture on your thread, but I saw your dove shot and wanted to share one of mine. Let me know if this is out of line.

This particular shot was taken with a 10D and a Sigma 50-500.

These were taken with the Canon 400mm L f/5.6 on a 10D.

I don't mind about you posting a picture at all. However, next time please don't shame me so bad!

ROFL - just kidding, honest. That's a great shot!

:P Not my intent.

Is the 400 5.6 your preferred birding lens?

I just got the 400 Prime - I've had the 100-400 L for some time. I love the 100-400 for the zoom and especially the IS. I love going out early in the morning or overcast days so the IS helps tremendously.

I've had the 400 prime for 3 days now, and haven't been able to give it a good test against the 100-400. My thoughts are that it's a little sharper and more contrasty, and a little faster to AF. My hopes are that these points are noticably better than the 100-400 or I'll be returning it.

I'd like more reach, but I got hooked on Canon L glass and the next step up is the 500mm f/4 for $5300. Ouch.
