Did you add the vignetting in the corners on purpose, or is that part of the shot?

I shot them wide open.

what lens did you use? With a hood or filter? That seems like a lot of vignetting. Very cool shots though.

Good shots, you captured the action well.

What was your ISO? Seems noisy to me...?

They're all tone-mapped.

I like the last one the best but it does seem a little noisy.

Its only snowed a couple of times down here in Texas where I live. I would love to get the opportunity to shoot some snowboarding. Guess its just skateboarding and surfing for me.

The last one is cool! Did you use any artificial lighting?

Thank you.

No, I don't own any strobes... yet. I'm about a month away from grabbing a couple Alien Bees. Some killer lighting really would have set these shots apart.

Yeah, it would. What is tone mapping?

Yeah, it would. What is tone mapping?

It's the proper terminology for what most people refer to as "HDR." If you're not familiar, HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. You can do all the technical research, but, in a nutshell -- HDR is essentially the end result of several exposures that are "tone mapped."

Take several photos of the same scene (tripod, of course) at different exposures, then blend them together in a program called Photomatix. Or you can just process a RAW file at different exposures...that's easier, and you can get the effect on ANY shot (no legs needed) but they don't come out quiiiiite as crisp -- personally. What this does, is blend all the levels of exposure onto the same plain. Think of it as 'super photography.' You can get some neat effects, in the right situations.

It's a big-time fad, right now. Not everyone uses it well, or in the right situations. It's like anything else... moderation is the key.
