Very nice images. I'm surprised an archive thread isn't already in place. Make sure you send a PM to Mike (In2Photos) to get it added to the archive. He's pretty good at catching these, but he's not Superman. :)

Just got the lens for Christmas. Hope to be posting some pix soon.

Actually I went back and forth between the Canon EF-S 60mm and the Canon EF-100mm for months before deciding to ask Santa for the Sigma 70mm f/2.8! ;):D:D:D

Almost forgot! Very nice images. My macro interests lie mostly in flowers (wildflowers, in particular) as well. Not really into photographing bugs. At least not yet.

hmmm you can buy more glass in the 17 50 or something like that range... you can buy a 24 70 L ( i'm not buyin cuz it's on cash back right now... and for some reason i think it will soon be replaced ) .

you can buy a studio for your girls... here's a good portfolio from a guy usin a 350D : http://rekit.deviantart.com/

or u can wait for 5DMK II , then sell all ur current gear for it. 2000 + 1200 (maybe ? ) gives u 3200 which may be enough for it ?

Adamora

I got mine today!! I was very disappointed in the auto-focusing (slow and very loud) but I turned it to MF and I'm pretty sure it'll stay that way for a long long time. ;) Not ready to post any pics but so far I am loving this lens....I could see it becoming my favorite.

Those are great! What settings? I'm seriously considering this lens on a 7D as a lower cost alternative to the EF 100mm L macro

Candiness
23rd of January 2010 (Sat), 08:20
The EF 100mm L macro is likely the "faster" lens, the better lens; the Sigma 70 macro hunts a bit in AF mode. But I'm amazed at the build of Sigma and the results in many different settings. Best of all, it is INEXPENSIVE, dependable, and sharp.

The 70mm macro is not to be underestimated as an outstanding—and relatively inexpensive—portrait lens.

Is this lens not very popular?

Am interested in getting a macro/portrait lens, and this one looks great!

How does the AF compare to say the Canon 50 f1.8? And does the external focus extend much? Does it interfere much with macro work?

Is this better/worse than the Tamron 60 and Canon 60?

And most importantly, any more pics??? :)

Compared to the Tamron 60, I find the Sigma sharper. The focus limiter on the Sigma is really helpful for non-macro shooting (really missed that with the Tamron, one of the reasons for selling it). Af is noisier with the Sigma, but hunting is less of an issue thanks to the limiter (which goes from 0.5 m to infinity or from MFD to just below 0.5 m). I miss full time manual focus override with the Sigma, didn´t really appreciate that with the Tamron until i lost that feature...

I don't think any lens manufacturer could use their sharpest lens as reference against which all other lenses would be compared, and expect them all to be as sharp...

In this case, however, Sigma happens to produce the best (in my and many others' opinion) AF macro lens available.

That's the beauty of not being tied to one brand of lenses; I buy the best lens of a certain category (macro, wide angle, tele) I can find (and afford) and if that happens to be a Sigma, so be it.

Just like Canon, Sigma has their pro optics and their consumer optics. In terms of IQ, the 70mm is considered by many to be the sharpest macro currently available from any vendor, although Sigma's testing suggests it's the 150mm macro. Regardless, all macro lenses are going to be better than non-macro lenses in terms of sharpness and contrast, which is why they are more expensive. Still, the Sigma 85mm, 50mm, 24-70 HSM, 17-50 HSM and 120-300 are as good (or better) as their Canon equivalents in terms of IQ.

Note that the last image is probably the only one taken without a sigma 1.4TC attached (something I use a lot with my macro lenses for that little bit of extra magnification with hardly any loss of overall image quality).

Also if you want to you can check out the test series I did - fullsized versions there as well - matching the 70mm against the sigma 150mm and canon MPE 65mm
