I've shot 3 weddings and never even considered taking the 100-400 out of my camera bag.
One of the weddings a friend of the couple asked if I minded him joining us shooting. Think I shot mostly with my 17-40 and 28-135 IS on my 10D while my nephew shot with a 24-105. The friend was using a 70-200 (on his new 20D) and most of the shots he was standing well behind us. I felt bad because we kept getting in his way but ...

I often use my 50-500 sigma but only for out doors and candid shots for which it is fantastic.

I've used my Sigma 120-300 a few times before.
Now I've got the 24-105 don't know if I'll take it..
These are from almost 2 years back - only time I really used it

I use my 70-200mm 2.8 from the back during the ceremony but nothing any bigger than that.

I use a 50 1.4 , 85L, 24-70L, and a 70-200 2.8 at most weddings. Granted not all get used every wedding but all will get used at a wedding sometime during my schedule.

I've never used anything longer than a 200L at a wedding.

I shot a friends wedding about 8 years ago (slide film on a pair of T90s) and I did actually use my FD 300 f/4 to shoot from the back of the gathering (outdoor, lakeside wedding)

No, the 70-200 is about tops for wedding work. I don't think the 100-400 would do that good of a job indoors, and it might be too long even for outdoors unless the venue is large.

I don't shoot weddings, but at a recent outdoor wedding I attended they had 3 shooters 1 with a 100-400. They also used a 24-70 and a 70-200.

I have used my 100-400 at a christening in quite a dark church, with the 430 i got some great candids :)
would have prefered the 70-200 2.8.
