Found out about smugmug.com about a week ago and just curious to see who here uses it for hosting files online or even as there website? I see with the pro account you can arrange your profile to be like a website, which i found to be pretty cool. I also saw a guestbook on the page of the photogs i met while shooting birds. Any good recommendations about this site or anything similar, I have a flickr and photobucket account but will probably be getting rid of the photobucket.
Thanks
Sevan:)

I have one for my "fun" images, although I wouldn't consider using it as a professional website. It's probably one of the better ones out there.

I've been using smugmug for over a year. However, yesterday, I switched to Zenfilio. Per my experience, Zenfilio is faster, has better layout, provides better securities, etc.

I use SmugMug, but am slowly working on a freestanding site and hope to use SM for only client proofing and ordering by April.
I like SM, but want a bit more control of what I can do with my site.

Thanks guys for the feedback, I was going to use if just for hosting pics with the possibility of purchases, Just thought it would be the easier alternative then going the route of a website.

I've had a SmugMug professional account for two years now. Works well for me with the lacrosse photos. Very trouble free for ordering and you can't go wrong with the 100% guarantee.

I've been using SmugMug for around 3 months and I love the way you have control over the CSS/HTML/Javascript (with the Pro account), to the extent that you can make it your own customised site, including using your own domain name. Also very helpful people in the forum if you're not that familiar with code and want to know how to do something.

Jerry,
I might just do that Jerry! I've done a fair bit of self-taught customisation learnt mainly from dgrin, but it's not quite swept up yet and as I don't know any html or css other that picked up on dgrin it's a bit of a black art for me to solve the remaining issues!

I have been using SmugMug for a couple years now, and every year when my subscription comes up I check out the competition...IMHO they are still #1. I have really enjoyed using Smugmug, even though it seems Zenfolio is catching up in some aspects. At the same time, Smugmug has a lot more features such as both regular and HD video upload, commenting on photos etc which can draw interest to your pictures from others, not to mention complete CSS / HTML control which I used to modify my site the way I like.
When selling photos, Smugmug also allows you to set up a proofing period which allows you to review and make corrections or adjustments to your pictures once they ordered by the customer, but before they are processed. You can also sell digital downloads in several sizes, if that is your thing. Plus the ability to backprint your photos with you website or logo is pretty cool.

I use Smuggy,
I looked just now at Zen and they limit your maxim file sizes, depending on your account.
I do a lot of custom stuff for brides, file sizes can get big.
Ill stay with Smuggy.

we have a pro account to host various event images for a motorcycle forum that i help moderate. seems pretty bullet-proof as far as hosting images goes, and i like many of the features, but haven't ever used it for having prints made.

I have a question for you smugs. I purchased my domain name through go daddy, and want to just basically host images and have galleries for clients to look at. I just do small part time work with some sporting events and such. I know zero about web design. Would I be best off just doing a smugmug pro account or zenfolio? I just really didn't want to come out of pocket that much since the site is only $17 a year and free hosting if you let them use their banner(which doesn't bother me at all.)

You can check out my site for the I-just-went-on-DGrin-and-did-everything-that-I-could-just-copy-and-paste-design. It's www.hrephoto.smugmug.com (http://www.hrephoto.smugmug.com)
When it's time to pay again, I might look into BluDomain. Their sites, while giving less creative control and storage, look a lot crispier.

Hello, Sevan!
I use SmugMug for my main site. The reason: people can get on the site, see an imaeg they want, and order it using a credit card. It then gets printed and mailed to the customer. I get a check for my portion of the sale. I never have to do a thing regarding the sale - just get a check. I do not know of any other site where this is all done for you.
A freestanding website would require that a customer actually contact you, then you collect their payment, then you order a print and have it mailed to them. Who wants to do all that? What if you're out on the road for a couple weeks without internet access and out of cell service? Then the customer is gonna be mad that they tried to contact you and you never got back to them. Best to just have it all done automatically for you.

You need to set the prices yourself. Otherwise, the only price the customer is charged is the base price (cost of the print only). You need to add the markup to them.
As to how much you get, that is 85% of the markup. In other words, if an 8" by 10" costs $5.00 for the print, and you add a markup of $20.00, then the customer will pay $25.00. You will get 85% of the $20.00 markup, which is $17.00
SmugMug will mail you a check once a month, no matter how small that month's total is.

you set the prices, they deduct 14% plus the basic cost of print.
Say you sell a 4x6
your cost .19 cents.
you sell for $3
your direct profit after cost $2.81
14% $0.39
your total profit $2.42 & never touched a photo.
when you make a $100 profit , you can request a check or every 3 months, they will send you one or if you hit $500, automated check.
I sell a lot of downloads, i price them at $3 each. Cost me $0.55each.
