I was just wondering what is the good, better, and best time of the day for outdoor shots?

I know the hour or so around sunrise and sunset are the best. I have also heard that 10AM-2PM is the worst.

Part of the reason for the question is I was looking over thew past few days and "discovered" that at this time of year, in Boston, the sun in never directly overhead. It looks more like, at high noon, the sun is in about the same position at it would be at about 2 or 3pm in summer time. Would this change the 10-2 rule?

Thoughts?

The best light for outdoor photography is when its the right light on you subject for the visual statement you're trying to make. Good thing about the northern hemisphere US and being in the upper midwest is the from end of Nov thru Feb the sun all day never gets to high in the sky.

There are some generalizations you can make like for me sometimes that light before sunrise or just after sunset depending on what you're shooting can be very interesting.
