In contrast to the worst purchases of 2007 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=4557575) you've made, it's time to now reflect on the best. [erm.. to do with photography. I don't want this to be an excuse for people like Mark to talk about their new Bentley.. now that would just totally ruin my Christmas.]

Here would be mine:

Lenses
17-55 f/2.8 IS
35L

No new camera bodies this year..

Accessories:
PecPads. Wow, where have I been all my life?

Edit: Forgot the damn tripod! 055XPROB and 488RC2. Bloody awesome!

Got something planned for next year? Put it down on the roster:

My "new" 30D (bought from a POTN member) is a huge improvement over my 300D. At $675, money well spent.

The Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro is a very nice lens - got it last summer.

Mine has to be the 1D Mark III, the 300 f/2.8 IS, and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS Lens. I have had some issues with the Mark III, but it is back from repair and so far looks to be mucho bettero.

My 1D MK3 on a good day, on a MK3 bad day My 70-200 f2.8 (I have bought all my Equipment this year in last 6 months), just got the 16-35Lmm and after a few shots I think this may pip the Mk3, it is so sharp for a UWA it hurts my eyes :)

Top 3 :

1st : my XTi, sure beats the nothing I had before
2nd : Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
3rd : a 'real' tripod & tripod head (not that $10 Targus I had)

KarlMarsh

The 17-55 was by far my best purchase of 2007. Not only that but it is the sharpest, best IQ lens I have ever owned. I could not be happier with it. :D

Canon should just bundle it with the 40D and raise the price to $1800 so they could go head to head with the Nikon D300. The D300 might have a couple more bells and whistles but the 40D / 17-55mm combo would kick Nikon's a$$ in IQ and overall performance.

This year I redid my entire kit...

30D, 24-105, 100-400, 50mm 1.8, Crumpler Bags, 420EX. I really over did it in 2k7 after not spending money for many years on anything new :(

and it all came after finding a site called POTN (Join Date: Apr 2007) :p

My primes, really having a lot of fun with all of them.

Also selling my 24-70 to buy the 24-105. For the times I use this midrange zoom, the 24-105 is just better for me.

Tough call as which is the best.

300F4LIS used from PetKal was a good one
2XMKII was a good deal and used but very well treated
Wacom Intuos 6X8 used but really was BNIB, looked like parts were not even unwrapped.
Spyder 2 Pro turned out to be a real good move.

Edit: But I guess it sould have been the 1D MKIII that I received on Friday, but consistant ERR 99 issues have dampened that euphoria :-(

muscleflex
23rd of December 2007 (Sun), 15:11
best purchase this year for me would be my first L lens, the 100-400L!
but best gift for me this year would be the gift from my lovely: my Canon 1D MKIII and a Canon 16-35 II L and a 580ex II!

MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL!!!!

and though the 70-200/2.8 IS is awesome, I'd say I think my 17-55/2.8 IS would be me best purchase as I bring it everywhere.

this thread better suits my purchases of 2007 since i wasn't really very unhappy about anything that i bought.

my best purchases:

1) 100-400L. i hemmed and hawed and eventually replaced my 300L f4 IS with an excellent copy of the 100-400L. this was my best move of the year.

2) lightroom and CS3. makes shooting in raw much less of a hassle and i have better editing control.

3) new gateway laptop. smaller and has a much better screen than the dell that it replaced. much more handy for viewing and editing files out of town.

4) NEC 20WMGX2 monitor. WOW. i see pictures like never before. great monitor for viewing and editing and just about everything else.

5) 30d. i first bought another 20d but replaced it with the 30d which was so much better as it is almost identical to my 5d. i tried going it alone with the 5d but now that i have the 30d as a back-up and for wildlife work i am getting better results.

6) 17-40L. picked up an almost new copy for about $400.

i'm sure there are other things but these are the main ones that come to mind :D.

I'd have to say the purchase of my XTi was the best purchase, by far, of the year. Got me back into photography and has opened a couple of doors that wouldn't have been opened without it.

Lens-wise, the purchase of the 17-55 f/2.8 IS, the 70-200 f/4L, and the Tamron 90mm Macro were the best.

Been a heck of a year with equipment since I started doing weddings.

Nearly changed all my gear.
40D,BG-E2N, 17-40 L, 50 f/1.4, 70-200 L f/2.8 IS and I love it all.

Forgot the Manfrotto 055XPROB/808RC4 combo.

Upgrading my 70-200 F/4 to the 70-200 F/2.8 IS.
My Tamron 17-50 F/2.8 gave me the most return on investment, but I'm considering upgrading it now.

I was also very happy with upgrading my 85L to 85L mark II - a big improvement. Also, 35L is a great lens to have. 580EX II was also a good buy, lighter & faster and controlled from camera.

5D: Very nice cam, but not sure if it's right for me
10-22: Very nice, but I've got the 5D now, so I don't need it
17-40L: Nice for FF, sold it as I was selling the FF, but I'm not so sure if I should sell it
24-70L: Nice lens, but I swapped it for a 24-105L IS, which is as nice, or nicer :D
100-400L IS: Well, it's been performing well, but I'm not too convinced with its performance at 400mm

Gotta be the MkIII...ok so I am in line for the sun mirror fix, and it doesn't work when it's less than -10 which in Montreal is a problem (should be solved at the same time as the submirror), but stringing for a daily with a 20d and a 10d was difficult. Now if I can only get the darn thing to work consistently...
Number two, almost better than the MkIII, is my Chestvest...saves my back almost daily.

My number 4 best purchase: A bogen auto-pole set (looks way better then the gas pipes I was using to hold up backdrops )

My number 3 best purchase: a pair of Sandisk 8GB Extreme IV CF cards (fast and holds more then enough images )

My number 2 best purchase: a new laptop computer w/ PS CS3 upgrade. (again darn handy for traveling )

It's been a very good year for camera buys...

XT + kit + 75/300 = $120....sold the lenses for $165 kept the body = $45 profit + 180 (replaced D30) = $225 profit
50/2.5 macro + EOS 10s = $70 sold my 50/1.8 MKI for $135 = $65 profit
30D + 28/135mm kit = $830 - 300 (lens) - $350 (replaced 10D) = $180(+tx) for the 30D
300mm/4.5 MF Nikkor for $60 less $60 for Tamron zoom it replaced = free upgrade

and the pair of Nikon > EOS adapters that allows me to use my MF Nikkors...

This has been a good year.

17-55 f/2.8 IS prior to the birth of our first grandchild in March.

This lens has had a lot of use as our second grandchild was born in September.

40D in November for Christmas and just about every gift giving occasion in 2008.

I now am very happy with my kit.

Except for a couple CF cards, I don't think I bought any gear at all this year. So, I'd have to say my best photography related purchase was the custom frame I had professionally made for a 20x30 print. It cost a little over $600 to have it done, but it looks fantastic!

Elinchrom Skyports ........so small and light and ooooze quality.

I purchased a set of scripts/action that run on the paint shop pro series and I think there were about 50 for only £5  brilliant value , and work really well:cool:

id have to say my newest and most fave purchase this year is the 70-200L 2.8 is usm lens.. ive only had it for 2 weeks but i am blown away by the quality and colours it produces. After having afew 3rd party lenses and now having this lens and the Canon 17-55 is usm lens ive decided to only stick to canon lenses from now on.. the colour straight from the shot is pretty much spot on and im finding im editing less in RAW now. I still have the Sigma 10-20mm but if money provided i would ditch it for the Canon 10-22mm...

40D definitely. Course I didn't get much else camera wise this year so not a lot of competition for it.

35L, 85L, 70-200 2.8 non-IS and the 40d

Painfully I sold the 135L to help fund this, that will eventually be re-aquired.
